I have a possibly ignorant question that somebody might be able to answer for me. Florida gets a lot of hurricanes, and when they come they are very destructive. Japan gets probably the same amount of typhoons every year, possibly more, but unless you're right ont he coast (say 300 yards) there's really not much damage done. Are the hurricanes in Florida that much stronger than the typhoons, or are the Japanese just better at planning for typhoons/constructing things to withstand them?

Well, as of late, many believe paranoia is the best prevention for many things, so I thought this would be a fitting intro to the hurricane season

lol, you do have a very valid point. If we run around and make it look like we're preparing, maybe nothing will happen

My grandparents are down in Biloxi for the weekend as we speak. They called me earlier to say they were planning on riding the storm out (Of course, this was before the storm reached hurricane strength.). With the worst part of the storm being on the eastern side of it, Pensacola will be taking more of the brunt of it than the Gulfport/Biloxi area. They may end up staying an extra day or two down there because of this storm (I'm sure the casino won't mind that at all...)

Simple: Japanese live in houses made of stone, and Floridians live in trailor parks . Ok, maybe that's a bit too prejudiced, but the fact of the matter is, wood is still the preferred building material, whereas in most other parts of the western world concrete&stones are preferred. If you look at pictures of damaged or destroyed houses, most of those were made of wood.
