Hey guys, although this is not a big thing, but i was just wondering if any of you guys had that treatment done. I was reading things online about this and they all stated that dentists usually do this when the patient is in pain or the tooth show signs of it. But i have no pain at all, but somthing showed up on X-rays which indicated that there might be a problem, so the Doc. suggested a root canal...Also is there much pain involved with this?

I've had 3 root canals done...... if its done properly there should be no pain during it & very little if any afterwards.
If it's not done properly it can be incredibly painful. One of mine was done in Dubai & when I left there in the jumpseat of a C130 I discovered it obviously wasnt well done. Just the tiny pressure difference as we rotated was enough for it to be agony.
You may be interested to know that having a root canal (& the resultant crown) done is not necessarily a permanent solution. Aparantly the tooth (over a long period) becomes brittle & very prone to damage. I was told that it should be considered as a last resort so you may like to discuss the matter further with your doctor / dentist before proceeding.

Thanks for the replies guys, i am kinda nervious about going through with it, because i am in no pain with that tooth right now. Hopefully the dentist won't screw up anything that will make it worse. I am going on Thrus. for it, so i will discuss it more with him and see if he could just fill it instead of doing the root canal.***My Blog***

I had two. It didn't hurt for one bit. But it seems that I am one of those lucky individuals who are not afraid at all for the dentist.... Or the dentist was really good!

If you have a good dentist, you should be fine. When i had a root canal, i went to three dentists, each one made the problem worse, untill i found my current one, whom i havent left since.Sam Rudge

Probably the reason was that the dentist was good..Although i do not know about mine, since i have never gone to him previously. So i don't know if he is experienced or not. He's been in practice for maybe about 6 years or so. Hopefully the Anesthisia* will make things MUCH better.

Did you have pain in that tooth when you went in for the treatment? Because the more pain you have going into the treatment the more pain you will have after it, although it should go away??***My Blog***

A root canal isn't as bad as it's cracked up to be. You're going to start off by getting a shot of anesthesia in your gums (which is pretty much the only pain you'll experience through the process).
You're unlikely to feel much at all while the root canal is being done. There will be blood, so if you're queasy about that shut your eyes. Some dentists do a root canal over several sittings, by that I mean they will do bulk of the operation one day, and then temporarily patch it up, leaving the permanent suturing or whatever for another day. This way if there is some complication after the operation it can easily be checked out.
There might be some discomfort during the interim period (between the temporary and permanent capping), but as long as it's done right, after the permanent cap there really should be no more pain.
Don't get so nervous about it (that's easier said than done though), but just relax, it's a fairly routine procedure for most dentists, and I don't see why yours would be the exception.

EDIT: By the way, neither my mom nor my brother had a toothache when they had their root canals done. I'm one of the fortunate ones who has never needed to have a filling, root canal, braces or any other kind of dental work done (apart from a regular 6 month check)."The Director also sets the record straight on what would happen if oxygen masks were to drop from the ceiling: The passengers freak out with abandon, instead of continuing to chat amiably, as though lunch were being served, like they do on those in-flight safety videos."

On Christmas eve, many years ago, my gum started swelling. We were 1hour 40 min mins away from a dentist, it was late at night so we left it for the night. The next morning (Christmas day) it hurt like hell, so me and mum drove to Nelson, and got my into a dentist, he did his procedure, and all was fine, untill the anesthesia wore off a few hours later. We yet again, left it fro the night as he would ahev certainly been closed, so on Dec 26th, we headed back, in more pain than i was originally. more anesthesia was used and i was fine. On Dec 27th, it was unbearable, so we made the 4 hour 30 min drive back to CHC and after looking up many different dentists came to a conclusion, we went to a enw dentist, who fixed it all up, have had no problems since, and he has been my dentist ever since.Sam Rudge

I've had two, one on a tooth with no pain. The dentist couldn't figure out why it never hurt me.
That said when you tell people about a root canal they cringe. It does not hurt. The worst part was having them numb it with the shot in the gum. It doesn't hurt and there's nothing to worry about. I had my first one when I was about 12; not an ounce of pain.Tanner Johnson - Owner
