thanks for the input guys, i am going to head up to Vancouver for the winter season and take some lessons and hire some equiptment! should be fun and the packages are really well priced too! as for snowboarding, i have a balance dysfunction thanks to a neurological injury from a car accident, so i'd feel better on 2 ski's rather that 1 board.

I've tried both, and I would say for beginners to definately go with skiing. Snowboarding at first can be a bit of a pain in the arse, literally. Also Monty, I hope its not the case, but snowboarding might make your sore back worse.

I haven't tried snowboarding before, but I've heard skiing is much easier to learn. I have skiied before, though it was quite a while ago. When I lived in Germany, every year my school woudl take a week off and go skiing in the alps. The beginners would go to Winklmoosalm in Germany, while the advanced would continue up the mountain to Steinplatte. Same resort, but its on the Austrian side. Skiing is so much fun, though learning it can be pretty painful. I learned that my body can bend in ways I never thought possible. Very worth it though.

I ski and snowboard. I guess it is easier to learn to ski than snowboarding because you are facing the direction you are going. It is fun, and it is very common in Austria

    I'll post some pics sometime

Lucky, I never really got the hang of it, so I gave up and went to snowmobiling

Just go to any ski area and rent the gear. Sign up for a lesson and they may even throw in the gear. Skiing is easy, but I have been skiing for 39 years. Snowboarding is no big deal either, it's all what you get used to. Your chance of getting injured while learning is very high according to the statistics we see every year, but bones mend, and torn tendons can get sewn back.........

Ya, I agree with you on skiing over boarding but I wouldn't recomend Rossies. For a newbie, anything is fine and from what I know, rossies are actually more for intermidiate to advanced but I'm sure they do have something for newbs. Personaly, from what I've tried I like HEAD skiis the best.
