  • Non-Americas: Aruba story bombarding your newswaves as well??

Question is pretty self-explanatory-- particularly if any of you happen to be Dutch.

    It's unreal:
CNN/Fox/MSN are still so obsessed with "White Girl Lost in Aruba" that they've been friggin' interrupted developing Supreme Court (ya know, a topic that's actually relevant to the American public) news all day.

I mean hell, it's like they're determined to blow Laci Peterson's coverage out of the water (no pun intended) with this

The worst part is that the only reason for this is:

        1. SHES WHITE

        2. US CITIZEN

Exactly, it gets me really pissed off, that story is getting more coverage than any political news.

Hell, The Daily Show has more relevant political news than any of the networks.

What makes me really sad is the fact that thousands of children are kidnapped everyday, yet this one girl seems to be getting all the attention from the press. While, yes it is a sad story, I think our society needs to remember about the thousands and even possible millions of people that are also in danger, but never make it up to the news.

True, but that alone isn't enough.

...next time you're in the post office or holding a milk carton; take a look at how many other white female US Citizens are also missing, but don't have their mugs run at noon, 6, 10, and midnight every friggin' day.

The reason she, JonBenet, Laci Peterson, Elizabeth notsoSmart, et al made [inter]national headlines is not only because they're white and female--

--but because each of their stories have an element of "Fairy Tale" to them, usually catalyzed by personal wealth and beauty. Each one of them (superficially) appeared to be the cute sweet rich girl-next-door, sorta like living Barbie Dolls.

And people relate to that, big time. That's why last night, Bill O'Reilly; in response to criticism over the amount of airtime given to the Aruba story; basically held up papers saying that ratings have skyrocketted over the last three weeks, whenever segments on that story are aired.

As sick as many of us seem to be with the whole travesty, there's unfortunately a myriad of people who are sucking up every minute of it-- in a Days of our Lives-meets-Gilligan's Island type way

well, I absolutely have no idea what I'm doing here at 3 am (just came home from work), so I guess I'm going to reply to this one.

Here in the netherlands it's not too bad, got to the front-page, still is a newsitem every now and then but nothing too major. Sounds like the US sends it's people into death (Irak), but on the other hand makes a complete fuss about one death :S. Can someone explain this to me?

We don't get a lot here... I think it's been on the news 2 times, not more than 1 minute each time. Y'know, just small updates So I can't say we're being bombarded with it, no.

When I zap to CNN however ... they certainly talk about her a lot...

3 little hispanic boys die locked in the trunk and the only news attention that story gets is a horrable video of the father finding the dead bodys (I think the news companys where way out of line to show that footage and I was discusted when I saw it) and a pretty white girl is lost in aruba and she gets 95% of the news.

People are dieing all over the world, there are countries in africa where children are handed AK47s and are foced against their will to kill poeple in rebel armys, tsunami victams are still struggeling, we are fighting in Iraq. With all this going on most of the news is on the pretty white girl lost in aruba.

I also doubt this story would be as big if the person were less atractive or of a different race. I do wish a happy ending for the girl in aruba, I just think the news in america is f***ed up

What can I say, a lot of people in the U.S. don't care about important news, they care about interesting news.

And it doesn't even appear as if whatsherface even avoided the behavior that lead to her disasapearence. Sure it's sad for her family, but maybe she should have learned to avoid situations such as she got into. Honestly, it disgusts me.

Did anyone see the "Breaking News" alerts on the case today? I was flipping through the news channels and on every single one I saw, "Three suspects charged with murder." Within half an hour the headlines were changed to, "Three suspects may have been charged with murder three weeks ago."

If they want to report it, that's fine, but they should at least wait until they get all of the facts before they go interrupting TV coverage.

For the record, I agree with almost everyone who has already posted on this thread. The media is f*cked up for the most part. If I want the most fair and unbiased (or equally biased) news, then I will tune to MSNBC. Better than Fox, CBS, and CNN IMO.

Good ol' American bullshit if you ask me.

This case, the Peterson death (I was on a cruise at the time so thank god I didn't follow this one), then the vegetable story (we all know now get over it please), OJ (kill me now).

What about the little kid that was lost in the woods for like 3 days...i heard about taht for a while...but then that went down after he was found....like Elizabeth smart (but shes kinda hot lol). The whole war thing is getting pretty sickening too....when did america go down the toilet?

When the Republicans took over.....plain and simple...

The Clinton case was funny...although I was too young to understand and follow and remember any of it....I hear it now and laugh.

Sorry, can't blame this on us. Most of the media are Democrats who would love to see the Republicans lose power.
