    Hello,

    I'm trying to figure this Geom. Problem out, but i can't get it, it is "Write an equation of the line that passes through point P and is parallel to the line with the given equation"

    Problem: P (1, -2) y=5/4x-8 ......

    I did the problem, but it keeps on coming out to be y=5/4x+15/4? But the actual answet is y=5/4x-13/4

    Can anyone get that answer by doing it? I think i'm missing a step..

    You need a line parallel to y = 5/4x -8, so naturally, the slope of that line is also 5/4x, but you just don't know where it is shifted.

    So now you have y=5/4x + C
    to find C, just sub in x=1, y=-2
    so
    -2 = 5/4*1 + C
    C = -2 -5/4 = -13/4
