That is a pretty vile TAF!

And vile weather as well, light snow showers and blowing snow, also overcast at only 500 feet at one stage.

I hope you didn't go VFR after reading the TAF!

This is a TAF hot of the press from my neck of the woods, short and sweet.

      TAF NZCH 090132Z 090118
      07008KT 30KM FEW030
      PROB30 1518 0400 FG
      2000FT WIND 01012KT =

And this is a synoptic chart from about 3 hours ago if anyone's interested. Anti cyclone + Spring time = good times.

Emu do you have a synoptic chart handy from around the time when your TAF was released?

here we go. I put GFK on the map since it would be pretty unreasonable to expect you to know where it is. Kudos if you did though.

              No kudos for me.

Hey I know what would make a good thread (especially for pilots). Posting a TAF and getting people to describe the synoptic chart based on the TAF's information. Then after a few guesses the actual chart is posted to compare.

I knew Joe before you posted the chart there was low with isobars being close together. I thought though a cold front would’ve featured, I was surprised to see a warm front that just passed over.

Bags not interpreting Emu's TAF for Jannichan, it will give me a headache.

I don't understand a single word either, but looking at the provided map, I would say it is probably windy as hell at GFK (though in end it will probably mean the exact opposite ).

Quite easy when you have some practice

KGFK (Grand Forks 'International' Airport) Forecast was made on the 8th day of the month at 2337Z. Its Valid on the 9th from 00z-24z (24 hours)

From there it goes on to say that starting at 00Z the wind will be from 170 degrees at 10 kts (17010KT) Visibility will be greater than 6 statute miles (P6SM) and clouds will be Broken at 12,000ft (BKN120)

Then from 100Z (FM0100) the wind will be from 280 degrees at 17 knots gusting to 25 (28017G25KT) still with greater than 6 miles of visibililty (P6SM) clouds will be Broken at 2,000ft (BKN 020)

Then Temporarily from 02z till 05z (TEMPO 0205) there will be light rain showers (-SHRA - means light SH means showers RA means rain) and clouds will be broken at 1,500ft (BKN015)

All cloud levels are measured from above the ground (not mean sea level) anybody (who isn't a pilot or knows how to do this from somewhere else) else care to finish? Let us know if you have any questions on anything. This is a pretty monster TAF (which means Terminal Area Forecast and forecasts the weather for approximately 5 miles around the airport, for 24 hours). On average they're normally only 2-3 lines long when the weather is stable.

It's sunny, cold, with a gusty wind from the SW in the Isle of Man. Perfect picture taking weather, light fluffy clouds and blue sky.

AND I'M STUCK IN A BLOODY OFFICE!

                        I feel better now

Ok, maybe it's a dumb question, but what is the difference between a TAF and a METAR? It looks like a TAF is more detailed, but is that the only difference?

                              Shadower:

The Metar is the current observation of weather.

The TAF is like a forecast of conditions to expect in the next 12/24 hours.
