    AVG Free
    Spybot S&D
    Ad-Aware

It is often true that Spybot and Ad-Aware find different things. Also interesting is I always get a few IE tracking devices even though I don't use IE

Most people have both because the program's virus/spyware database isn't the same so one might miss a dodgy folder where as the other will detect it.

Your right with your other post common sense beats any software hands down. I was in a hurry and opened a .exe without first scanning it, that's how I got infected.

    Or are you?

For me it's quality over quantity.

I've tried ZoneAlarm before but found it far to intrusive. It would always have things popping up from the system tray. Many other professional programs are like this as well, they just lag up your system.

You can stay perfectly safe without these performance hyjacking programs, you just need to know where to look.

Some of you guys are paranoid

I have AVG and AdAware but I rarely use them. Instead I've got my own brain which allows me to distinguish what might be a virus and avoid it. I haven't installed any Windows updates or service packs at all either . I do have a correctly configured firewall though to prevent other types of attacks

I still don't understand how do other people actually contract viruses? They don't just hop in to your system by themselves even though it appears they have.

Last year my computer was wiped out by a virus. That was before we really took it seriously. It even made it to where we couldn't open up a cd burning program to backup stuff. Now we have Adaware, spybot, and a ZoneLabs firewall. No problems so far, which is surprising, considering all the downloads.

I use AVG (Free Edition), Ad-Aware, Sygate software firewall (just so I know what is trying to connect to the internet and when), and I just left the WindowsXP firewall on by default. I also have a HotBrick VPN800/2 hardware firewall/traffic director. The most used application would be common sense though
