"The first blast happened at 0603 GMT at the Buncefield fuel depot, close to junction 8 of the M1 motorway and was heard as far away as the Netherlands."

"Earlier rumours a plane was involved in the incident were unfounded, said a police spokesman."

This sounds like yet another excuse for the oil companies to raise oil prices again.

Please tell me your joking. Are you seriously that narrow minded...

That huge cloud of black smoke over the UK is some very elaborate "excuse".

            Im Terrified....

I am less than a mile from the oil depot. The explosion this morning was like nothing i had ever experienced. house shook, Bed shook. shelves came off the wall.

Run out side my front door to see the horror of 200 foot flames. I have never ever ever felt the way I did, I cant even explain what was running though My mind...

pic I took about an hour after the blast

Here Is a map of the area, I have circled the oil depot, the red X's represent building that have been deverstated by the shock wave. The blue spots indicate where new crews are. And the red spot in the bottom left hand corner is where I am.

Hope everyone else in the Area Is ok.

Relax...get some pictures! It may be scary, but thankfully no one was killed and most of the injuries were minor. Keeping that in mind, enjoy it! It isn't something that happens every day, and in 10 years you will be able to tell people. "I was there."

Now, if people had indeed been killed by the explosion I would be telling you a completely different thing...

It's not completely unfounded, Dan. That oil oligopoly has a history of looking for just about anything to rip all of us off.

Now that we know there are no fatalities, I am interested to know the cause, especially since one of the witnesses in the BBC photo link who used to work there, said the facility has "exemplary safety record".

Last I read it'll take days, possible even weeks to extinguish the fire. Hope the fire fighters will manage to gain control faster than that, it is already seriously bad as it is.

Ya, unfortunately there isn't much anyone can do, other than waiting for the fuel to get all burnt out.

"Many houses have been damaged, with some reporting feeling effects from the explosion as far away as Oxfordshire - while it was heard in a number of counties and even France and the Netherlands"

BTW, most of us in North California (where it is much colder now) are heating our homes using the traditional method of blazing the damn fireplace. I am not going to complain about gas here because the English are paying more and just might pay a lil more after this "accident".

Or do more of the English use electrical heating?

Firefighters are awaiting large quantities of foam to douse the flames. This effort should start at midnight and will last well into tommorow.
