After reading a thread on a.net about this, I figured making a thread here would be quite informative.
I was diagnosed with Asperger syndrome a few months back. I am still going through tests to see how severe my case is, but at the moment, it seems like I have a pretty severe to medium case. A lot of people don't know about this as it's fairly new- back in 1990, a psychiatrist probably wouldn't have heard of it.
I have been diagnosed. After talking to Alex, he has the impression that he has it too, and I wouldn't be surprised (I pointed out the thread on a.net to him because I think he should get it checked out- I recognize a lot of my symptoms in alex).
He requested me to post this link: http://helios.acomp.usf.edu/~begeiger/as-symptoms.html
This is a list of AS symptoms. I'm not trying to make half of JP blurt out "OMG, I think I might have it!!!"- if you think you do have it, you should talk to your doctor- don't diagnose yourself (as half of a.net did ).
Asperger syndrome is a syndrome within the autistic spectrum- meaning, technically it's autism, but technically it isn't- often, it is refered to as "on the border between being 'normal' and being autistic". A lot of aspergers have an obsession for aviation (as well as trains, buses, etc)- and since quite a few a.netters have it, I figured that maybe there'd be a few JP'ers as well. Are any of you diagnosed with AS or do you know someone who is? How does it affect you?
Also, to have 30-70% of the symptoms is quite common- I'd say 90% of the world can live up to at least 10 things on this list, but that doesn't mean they have AS.
It's most commonly seen in boys, so it was quite a surprise to find out that not only I have AS, but my best (female) friend through 4 years has it too.
Anyway, i thought the a.net thread was interesting and informative- it could be interesting to see JP'ers response to this as well
