  • London may have won 2012 Games on error

"LONDON (AP) -- A senior Israeli member of the International Olympic Committee says London won the bid for the 2012 Games only because of a misplaced vote"

They're making so many assumptions though, some of which are dubious at best. Even us Yanks know the French and the UK aren't too lovey dovy, but I'm sure not everyone in the UK would have voted against Paris. After all, every Briton is a Francophile deep...deep down

In any case, it's too late to do anything about it now, and the city I wanted to win won!

Olympic Games is a crock of shit, it lost it's true meaning many years ago, they should just hold it at Olympia every 4 years and be done with it...I'm 50% Greek and i'm pretty appauled at what's become of one of our lasting legacies to the world.

Given your avatar, I'm somewhat afraid to suggest it, but excessive commercialism could play a part in it. There was a time when the Olympics really were apolitical and didn't have so many outside forces. For instance, the US played in the 1936 Berlin games even though Hitler was under watch. It was only after the Cold War begin that politics began to sweep across the board. Sure, they were boycotted in 1940 and 1944, but that was due to an international consensus. When there's war activity going on in six of seven continents, its not time for fun and games! And people got that.

But in 1980, the US led 62 nations abd boycotted the Moscow games. Russia in turn boycotted the 1984 Los Angeles games, I believe. And from then on, we've been mired by these stupid politicians and their manipulation. If the games are in a city, it is an honor not to the mayor, governor, or president but to the citizens of that city.

Once again, the fallacies of modern society frightens me.

(Every thing below this point is from an edit...did some actual reserach)

Turns out it gets more interesting! The first instance of a pact of nations boycotting the Olympics was in 1976 by....black African nations protesting New Zealand's participation in the game (any Kiwis want to shed some light?).

Then came the American led coalition against the USSR (1980-Moscow). They boycotted because the USSR invaded Afghanistan in 1979. Interesting times. And while the USSR apparently cited growing (excessive) American commercialism, they boycotted the LA 1984 games as revenge. Both of these acts are somewhat idiotic in my book, but can't change anything now, can we?

And even more bizarre, there was one common East-West Germany team until 1964. I assume the Berlin Wall and the true division of East Germany contributed to this. Man, all those years the governments detested each other but they still got together once every four years to watch sports...haha. The next game together was in 1992-Barcelona.

The Berlin games of 1916 were also canceled...guess they didn't try to reschedule it then. But let's face it-how many countries even existed back then? Most of Africa, Asia, etc were still European and the British Empire was still considerable. If you look at records, most of the games were in Western Europe or the United States.

The IOC originally planned the 1940 games in Tokyo, but quit when that country entered the war. They moved it to Helsinki, but the USSR invaded Finland, which squashed that idea. It was then that they decided to cancel them outright-can't say they didn't try.

Also note the USSR or the US were consistently first throughout much of the century.

So I suppose things got really screwed due to politics since 1964.

i come from a family full of communists, though my avatar doesn't have anything to do with my beliefs, i've been interested in Russia alot longer than i have the Olympic Games...then again my grandmother was born in Odessa, which is now part of the Ukraine.

the games are nothing more than a money making exercise, participated in by athletes that will go to extraordinary lenghts to win a gold medal, back in the ancient times they just recieved a olive branch, doping wasn't existent, million $ sporting deals weren't sort, now it's big business and that's not the Olympic Ideal. It's full of professionals when it was a competition for amateur athletes, it's been run by a former fascist, had it's HQ relocated to Lausanne, not much left that is to do with the ancient ideals.

London won.....Paris and Madrid need to get over it, in fact the people of Madrid and Paris should be grateful they are not paying for this nonsense like we are here in London.

the African countries' boycott claims in 1976 were
1/ the minor reason : some South African and Rhodesian born athletes were competing in NZ colours while not being actually New-Zealanders. During those years of sheer doppiness, SA was enforcing "apartheid" and was associated with the "racist-regime of Ian Smith" ...
2/ the big reason : Israel also then a "public" enemy was competing. In the wake of the Yom Kippour war back in 1973, almost ALL sub-saharian African countries broke up their diplomatic ties with Israel as a godwill of solidarity with the Arabs. My opinion of this : good to see they got SCREWED and ultimately creeped pitifully to restore their ties with Israel

Montreal is finally paying off the 1976 Olympics. Nothing like a bit of debt that goes on and on and on.
