Airline or corporate pilot for me. I've still got probably atleast 10 years before I even finish training and all that.

Depends on what you mean by great. I mean, looking at my chosen career path...which is professional pilot (as of this post, i am a private pilot on the verge of receiving my CPL), I get to look forward to constant worries about job security, economy problems, pay cuts, airlines going bankrupt, labor disputes, and terrorism. Most people would look at that and say...gee what a crappy looking career.

But me? Hey, I say it looks like a great career. I don't have to work for a day in my life. At least, that's how I look at it, flying doesn't look like work. Although it takes a lot of work to get the job.

I need a career? Damn!! Why didn't someone tell me in 1968!! I might have taken more notice of my exams!!

12 years to go before retirement, and I think I've done alright with just a couple of exams under my belt. But, these days you NEED those worthless bits of paper to get anywhere, as my eldest son is finding out. I admire you chaps with your plans, I just wish he had had the same attitude. Now, my youngest, he KNOWS what he wants to do - and with luck he'll do it.

Good luck to all of you starting out in the world of work.

        Andy

I was talking to a friend of mine the other day about these "papers". Over the last 3 or 4 years, I've slipped into a career (that sounds so 'adult' *shiver*) that I didn't ever thing I'd be doing..Seems funny to me, spending all that money for a job with computers, working with them a year or two and ending up somewhere completely different with out much use for what I've learned at the time.

I'm not sure if that's "growth" or "a wrong turn"

I know how that is. I am still some ways from finishing my private pilot, but I couldn't imagine doing anything else. I love flying.

define "great" and "career" and maybe I could give a more clear response....

Aerospace Engineering or Pre-law. If all goes well, I'll have a career, but I don't know if it will be great just yet.

Planning on a career in law...looking at good undergrad schools now (I'll be applying in only a few months), right now UNC-CH is my dream school along with Elon, and Syracuse would be fine as well.

I'm going to be a history major.

Retired military-dunno if my career was "great" but it sure had it moments of "the agony and the ecstacy" Right now my job sucks but just interviewed Monday in YMM for something more up my line with Suncor Corp.
However, this week gets stranger and stranger re job offers as it progresses. Just got an offer from a classmate and Major I know to go on a permanent callout ,ie return to active duty as a Deputy Project Manager at NDHQ!! I declined nicely given Fort Fumble on the Rideau was not my cup of tea when I was Reg Force, and I certainly am not going to entertain the thought of returning there as a Reservist on callout at this point. Man are they short of people in the Army! Hopefully I hear from Suncor soon!

It all depends on peoples definition of a "great career". Currently I am going into media/journalisim and I am as happy as can be. I am enjoying my education and my time through the process, and learning lots while going along. Others may say higher paying jobs are "great", however I really want to be doing my "career" as something I enjoy. I just dont get why people at my age (17) believe that all good jobs pay 3 digit figures and come with fancy cars. Ever since I was in public school Ive known that I want success, but success to me is not in money values or personal image. I want to do something for me, and I chose something that I have enjoyed all of my life .

So yes, I am on track for a great career, and yes I am happy and content at the same time.
