Robert Lumley was charged with stealing a pair of handcuffs after he ran from the police officer who handcuffed him.

"It's a theft," said Police Officer James Butler. "He took my handcuffs."

Officials say Lumley tried to buy a $96 DVD set for 25 cents from a Des Moines Wal-Mart on Friday afternoon by removing a bar code from a small electrical item and placing it over the more expensive item. He then tried to make the purchase at a self-service checkout station at the 5101 S.E. 14th St. store.

Butler, working in uniform in an off-duty police service job, took Lumley into custody. Shortly thereafter, the suspect made a run for freedom.

He dashed across the parking lot. With his hands cuffed behind him, Lumley left officer Butler behind.

"A guy in a car stopped and asked if I wanted a ride," said Butler, who is 38 years old. "I took it. I've aged a bit and packed on a few extra pounds."

As Lumley started to cross Southeast 14th Street, he tried to step over his hands to get them from his back to his front, police said. But he stumbled and went head first into the concrete.

Lumley tried to get up. But a man driving a black sport utility vehicle stopped, grabbed him and held him until Butler caught up.

"I'd like to thank everyone who helped," Butler said. "There were a lot of people trying to help."

Police charged Lumley, 24, with escape from custody, second-degree robbery, resisting an officer, and fifth-degree theft.

Too bad the idiot didn't know how the self-serve checkout machines work (by weight)! Stores know all about ticket switching. It's one of the oldest tricks in the book.
