In its most significant statement about race in a generation, a divided Supreme Court allowed the nation's colleges and universities to select students based in part on race.
I think this is discrimination, plain and simple. I believe acceptance should be based on grades/performance period. Not the color of my skin, sex, or ethnicity.
Against it. Like u said, acceptance should be on the basis of merit, not race.

After two generations of affirmative action in the United States the country is moving toward greater racial polarization so I would have to judge afirmative action as a failed experiment.
Since the US Constitution states clearly that, "All men are created equal," there should be no checkbox for race on any Government form that reads anything but, "Human." The same should be true for any applications to any institution or organization that receives Government funding. Since today's Supreme Court cases involved a state university that is supported by taxpayer dollars race should not be an issue or consideration in anything they do or any part of their educational program. All students should receive equal consideration and treatment.
Against it...plain and simple, for the reasons mentioned above, no use repeating them!

Affirmative action not only is reverse discrimination against whites but it also degrades minorities. It says either minorities are to stupid to get into an institute of high education without special treatment or that they believe they are to stupid to get in without preferences. Its funny, one of the smartest guys I remember from high school was black. Nicest guy you ever wanted to meet and could eat anyone alive academically. He finished 3 in his class and went to Cornell on scholarship. Unless some disaster happened then he should be finished with medical school and working on his residency.
As for why the Court voted the way it did. First of all, the media as usual isn't reporting all the facts. The court said that clear cut racial preferences are not allowed. The Court has actually sent race to the same level as extracurricular activities. No matter what these universities claim, they've been using race for years just most weren't as obvious as U.M.
The Supreme Court is well known for issuing rulings that are vague and don't address the entire issue. After taking several classes dealing with the Supreme Court I'll say I wasn't surprised by the ruling nor by who made up the 5-4 majority. John Paul Stevens, David Souter, Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Stephen Breyer are the liberal Justices and I would have probably died of a heart attack if any of them had voted to strike it down. Having studied many past opinions issued by the current court and written several papers on them I also wasn't surprised that O'Connor was the one to throw the vote. If we could as her why it probably wouldn't be because she wants to be politically correct and give minorities preference. O'Connor is the biggest "states' rights" member of the court and to her this was probably an issue she felt should be left to the states and not the federal government.
This issue isn't dead and surely will come before the Court again. If Bush replaces three or even four Justices on the Court then affirmative action might be gone for good. O'Connor is probably going to retire soon as is Chief Justice Rehnquist. The other two possibilities are Stevens and Ginsburg. Stevens is the oldest member of the Court @ 80 or 81. Ginsburg has suffered from cancer in the past few years so there is a big "?" next to her and whether or not she'll be on the court in the next few years.
If you want to read all the Court's opinions as well as the concurring dissenting opinions, then follow the link below. Its roughly a 1mb pdf. Be sure to read the dissent by Justice Thomas. It is another excellent writing by him.
Jeff, it seems u should change your question to who is against affirmative action.
That way more people will reply

Everybody is against it! You probably meant to say this - "I don't think anybody would be for it".
That's what I logically thought after reading your next sentence - "I don't care about race, skin color etc."
