  • Cameroon footballer Marc-Vivien Foé dies during match

Tragic news from the Confederations Cup in France. Marc-Vivien Foé collapsed on the pitch and was carried off the pitch unconscious and was pronouned dead 45 minutes later. He played for Man City last year on a season's loan from Lyon and may have signed for them after performing well for them, scoring several goals, pending an agreement on transfer fees. He also played for West Ham and, I believe, Lens, and was set to join Man Utd in 1998 but didn't due to him breaking a leg.

    RIP

Any news on what caused his death? Sounds strange to be a healthy athlete and to just die on the field...

It's thought to be a heart attack. Most of the TV pictures yesterday showed him prostrate on the stretcher with the medics trying to revive him. Our local TV station showed the footage of him collapsing....it was like looking a tree that's just been felled, with no-one near him.

There were a bunch of basketballers a few years back in the US that just randomly dropped dead. One of them played for University of Maryland. I think their common denominator was cocaine use.

I'm not sure if any of them kicked the bucket in the middle of the game, though. That is quite remarkable.

My heart goes out Foé's family, and team-mates at Cameroon, Lyon and Manchester City. May he rest in peace.

Incidentally, totally , I visited Lyon in 2000. If anyone else here has visited Lyon, answer me this - is it my imagination, or does Lyon have more dog sh!t per square foot of pavement than any other city in the world?
