For all of you who occasionally like to listen to classical music, which compositions do you think are particularly good? I'm trying to get a list of good classical music so I can then get them.

So far, some of the ones I like, in no particular order are:

Johann Pachelbel - Canon in D
    Ravel - Bolero
    James Swearingen - Centuria
    Bizet - Farandole
Wagner - Ride of the Valkyries
"The Director also sets the record straight on what would happen if oxygen masks were to drop from the ceiling: The passengers freak out with abandon, instead of continuing to chat amiably, as though lunch were being served, like they do on those in-flight safety videos."

I'll admit that I occassionally listen to classical music, particularly on red-eyes, but honestly, I have no idea who most of the artists are, let alone the titles of operas being played. Only remember 1-2 pieces were by Giuseppe Verdi, and of course Wagner's Ride of the Valkyries. Other than that, no names/titles I remember.

        Some of my favorites:
        1. Daphnis and Chloe (sp?) by Ravel, absolutely beautiful and emotional especially the finale. Even though it is about two lovers, I just picture a flight in an old biplane at sunrise as the music swells.
        2. Beethoven's Ninth, the old standby is sure to make you feel good.
        3. The Planets Suite by Gustav holst
        4. Rapsody in Blue, Gershwin
        5. American in Paris

Heh... well I have played cello now for... 8 years... play both contemporary and classical pieices, I like Gustav Holst's "Saint Pauls Symphony", 4 movement piece (Jig, Ostinato, Intermezzo, Finale "Dargason"). Yo Yo Ma is awesome as well, along with Apocalyptica .

IMHO the best live group Ive ever seen, and Ive been to a lot of good concerts!

Carmen by Georges Bizet is a specific one that I can think of right now.
Anything by Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, and Schubert are good as well.
Unfortunately, I don't know much about contemporary work.

In the mean time, Handel's Messiah will get you in the mood for Easter
