I own and drive a 2004 Honda Civic 1.6 ES sedan with manual transmission.
In my opinion, manual transmissions are better suited for cars like mine with small engines and not so high torque because it enables better performances and better fuel consumption.
For full-sized cars intended to be, above all, comfortable and easy to drive with big engines and lots of torque automatic transmissions are the more suitable.
For me a sports car with a traditional automatic transmission is a heresy. However, manual transmissions with automated clutch can be faster than a traditional manual transmission.
The likes of the Mercedes S-class have automatic transmission with sequencial gear that allows full automatic or semi-automatic use and are the best in this market segment.
I prefer to drive a manual car to have more control over it, however, when I'm stuck in a traffic jam for 1 hour + changing gear from neutral to 1st I really regret not driving an automatic.
My experiences with automatics are confined to rental cars in North America and Australia.
Regards.

Drive both actually. Mainly an Opel Corsa with stick shift, though during rush-hour, it can get very annoying.
Though my preference is the Opel Vectra from my father. It is automatic, but the best thing about it is Tiptronic. Or in other words, changing from D into gears 1-5 and being able to change gears yourself, without having the hassle of always kciking the third pedal. It less stressful than regular stick shift, but you can get the same advantages, e.g. changing into a higher gear faster, and go down earlier, so that the motor brakes by itself.
