Well, I'm not Italian and I've never lived there, however, I've been there as a tourist many times.

Italy is one of the most expensive countries in Europe for tourists and for the locals according to them. More expensive than Italy, perhaps only Switzerland and Scandinavia.

If you speak only English and don't understand a word of Italian you could survive there but you would most certainly have a hard time. Only some young people speak good English there and all the paper work is in Italian as expected. Well, you could always hire a translator if you can afford that.

As for moving there from another EU country it's only required that you have a job there or enough money to live without working, however I'm only sure about this for the "old" 15 EU countries I'm not aware if the rules are the same for the 10 "new" ones including Poland.

As for being a businessman in Italy I really don't know for sure but I get the feeling that there's lots of red tape as in a "good old" Latin country like mine. Unless you have a good "godfather" there.

Also bear in mind that there are "2 Italys", one north of Rome developed and organized just like any major European country, and another south of Rome underdevelopment and dominated by the local Mafia, especially around Naples and in Sicily.

If I can give you an advice stay in Canada if you can and forget about living in Europe for the next few years.

    Cheers.

For a fluent English speaker like you I would suggest you to contemplate the possibility of living in Ireland, one of the fastest growing countries in western Europe with many job and business opportunities or the UK.

If you're determined to go to Italy, please go to somewhere north of Rome or at least to Rome itself.

        Cheers.

Well, I've been already to Sicily but not to Palermo, but I'm sure it's beautiful.

I just hope that you know that Palermo is not only the capital of Sicily but also of the Sicilian Mafia. And the Mafia makes sure that people living there know of their existence. This is not a joke, unfortunately.

Well, I think they're even more ignorant about English than the French, however they're more willing to speak it.

              Cheers.

You're welcome and correct about that news.

But almost every town in Italy is beautiful and you don't have go much further south than Rome to get good weather all-year round.

The most beautiful place that I visited in Sicily was a little town called Taormina.

                  Truly exquisite.

                  Cheers.

If you have your accommodation and other logistic problems sorted out before you go you won't have any problem in Madrid.

Most people are very friendly and night life is awesome there especially in the summer.

You'll most probably become fluent in Spanish and Spanish girls are hot.

                        Cheers.
