    Pretty sure that countdown timer would be for how long that phase has left before it changes to next phase,Weird the way they display their lights in that country across horizontally not vertically.

      It's not that uncommon. Apparently it is quite popular at least in North America. Perhaps the way those horizontal ones are mounted gives them better stiffness in high winds... not sure though.

          In very few places we have the same here in Copenhagen.

          Newer traffic lights have timers for pedestrians and one place I have seen it for buses aswell.

            They have pedestrian timers in Columbia, SC. Useful for drivers too 'cause you can see if you still have time to beat the redlight!

              There are some here in San Francisco. Not on every intersection, but they are rather common here.
