Yes O Canada was originally written in French. Not only that it was writtien for St Jean Bapitiste Day, a Quebec holiday.

Another caller had to get a sponsor family and wait while everything went through, yet these people just walk over the border.
And the comment that they are doing hard jobs is alittle off in my opinion, I didn't see any Mexican's down in the coal mines when they exploded, and you don't see them in the Alaskan Crab fishing boats where they have a chance of being tossed overboard.....
They are taking the jobs in the fields where the farmers know they can pay $6/hr which no american would take. If they weren't here, the farmers/businesses would have to pay more to get the labor done.
So far, I haven't heard any real drawback from their walkout, people actually liked the fact that lines were shorter and were hoping every day could be a national walkout day for immigrants

Originally posted by screaming_emuI dont speak French, but I would imagine it does. Your post of our national anthem in Spanish (translated back) still held the same general ideas that it does in English. I really dont see the big freakin deal.

The other thing about these immigrants is some of the big businesses are behind them (so I heard from new reports). The fact is, businesses save a lot of money and they want these people. The US being such a capitalist country where businesses have good lobbying power, what's the incentive for them to support the legislation?

I decided to go up to San Francisco and do some freelance photography of the walk out. Here are some of the pictures:
Its crazy the argument started with like 5 people and then it turned into a crowd of a couple of dozen and that's when the cops had to come in a escort the guy and lady from the City Hall.
I got the seventh picture in my local newspaper.

I'd learn French over Spanish any day, but I don't mind the Spanish speakers. My beef is in fact purely political as it'd be foolish for an immigrant to be xenophobic- should I fear myself?
But choosing to not learn English in the name of diversity is quite stupid, to be frank. English is a central element of American culture and perhaps even world culture. My cousins in the old country speak flawless English thanks to their education. I also have no problem with speaking Spanish- I say a grand total of 20 words in English to my parents each day, and I hope my children take the time to learn my native language. But I'd hate it if they paraded down the street flying the Indian colors to spite Americans.
Diversity is really really overdone in this country in my opinion. "Cultures in check"? Haha...I'm from a country where there are 28 states, 18 different national languages, and myriad cultures- it's run to the ground. Every nation must have some common ground. The US has Catholics, Protestants, Hindus, Muslims, Atheists, Agnostics, Whites, Blacks, Browns, Yellows, Democrats, Republicans, Communists, whatnot. And all those people, until a few years ago, could say, "I'm proud to be American" in English. The language united us as a people. Immigrants who stepped off the boat said, to Hell with Italy, we're American! Why can't these Mexicans do the same thing and take a shot at being American? Desiring the fruit of this nation (money! NOT "personal liberties") and spitting on its culture and tradition is crude and I would rather those people not get the privilege to be U.S. citizens.
By the way, have you seen the US Citizenship exam? That test should be a billion times more difficult. "How many stripes are on the US Flag" is not a good question to ask of people who want to join this country.

Mark this date in you calendar jp.net agreed on something!
But seriously, I don't think we're really uniform on this. We are, however, uniform on how SQ is the best airline in the world. That is not choice.

Originally posted by Top_GunEmu, no I never had to learn a second language when I was in HS. Where would you draw the line of what language we translate OUR national anthem to? Do we do it in Chinese, Italian, French and Indian?
Originally posted by Top_GunDid these people NOT leave their country to get a better living, all they've done is try to make a new town. They won't learn English, waive the Mexican Flag. You want to live like your in Mexico, then go back to where your heart is.....
One of the best things about this country is that it is so diverse. Diversity leads to the mixing of all kinds of ideas. When you have a group made of many different backgrounds, they tend to keep eachother in check. When you get a large group of people who have the same views (i.e. our primarily conservative government) bad ideas snowball and get worse and worse till there's a meltdown. Pretty much what happened in Germany and Japan in WW2. So many people believeved the exact same things. So when the more extreme points of view were brought up. There was nobody from the other side to stand up and go "labor camps? That's a horrible idea!". This country needs a mix of people.

Originally posted by Top_GunDoes "O'Canada" read the same from French to English?
Originally posted by Top_GunIf we to immergrate to France, Spain, or Sweden, do you think they wouldn't put up a fuss if we wanted English speaking areas, and to change their anthem to English....
And I bet with minimal time on google, I could find the French, Spanish, and Swedish national anthems, translated into English.
Again, turning this from a "I dont want the national anthem in Spanish" issue to "look, they're speaking Spanish in America" demonstrates that your issue isn't a political one, but a xenophobic one.

I understand the issue everybody has against illegal immigrants. I feel the same way. But I dont think saying "everybody go the f*** home!" is the way to solve the issue. The reason people come here illegally is because to follow the rules is a royal pain in the ass. I'm all for a sort of guest worker program.
However, here's where it turns into a racism issue. People have every right to not like illegal imigrants coming into this country. But in my opnion, when it crosses the line, is when people start freaking out about things like "oh my god, they sing the national anthem in Spanish!" Right there, is where it crosses the line from genuine concern, to xenophobia and racism.
I'm going to guess that you've never studied a 2nd language? If you translate something literally word for word from one language to another, it will make absolutely no freakin sense. Dont believe me? Go to google, translate this post from English to another language, then back again. Yeah, what you posted above aren't the exact same words, but its still the same idea.

"The Star-Spangled Banner"
(First verse)
O, say, can you see, by the dawn's early light,
What so proudly we hail'd at the twilight's last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars, thro' the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watch'd, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof thro' the night that our flag was still there.
O, say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?
"Our Anthem"
(Translated from Spanish)
Verse 1
Oh, say, can you see, by the dawn's early light,
What so proudly we hail as night falls?
Its stars and stripes floated yesterday
In the fierce combat, the sign of victory
The flame of battle, in step with liberty.
Throughout the night it was said, "It is being defended."
Chorus:
Oh, say! Does it still show its beautiful stars
Over the land of the free, the sacred flag?
Verse 2
Its stars and stripes, liberty, we are the same.
We're brothers, it's our anthem.
In the fierce combat, the sign of victory,
The flame of battle, in step with liberty.
Throughout the night it was said, "It is being defended."
Chorus:
"Oh, say! Does it still show its beautiful stars?
Over the land of the free, the sacred flag?"
