  • Is Diet Coke bad for you?

According to the labels, Diet Coke has nothing in it except 40 mg Sodium- no calories, sugar, or carbs. But is it really as "healthy" as water? I've heard that some studies show aspartame gives you brain cancer, but I suppose they're unsubstantiated. Since it has no sugar in it, does it give you cavities? And (assuming) the nutrion label is true, can you sub in Diet Coke for water and get away with it?

Something not having sugar and 0 calories doesn't mean it is good for you. Aspartem, although containing no sugar, still has the same affects as sugar on your body. Your body treats it like a carb and therefore you gain weight if you have excess of it. Newsweek published an article on it some time ago, I look for it. It was very interesting and it stated research proved that diet soda causes you to gain MORE weight, then non diet soda.

The caffeine in Diet Coke, indeed many regular sodas causes you to loose more water than you take in. NOT a good thing on a hot day. I find it diificult to believe you can gain weight from something with no calories, expo svp provide your reference. Problem is most people use Diet Coke to wash down a double cheeseburger with large fries and pie, on top of the chocolate bar they ate earlier and wonder why they gain weight.

From what I have read, the amount of aspartame given to the lab mice to cause the cancer is exponentially higher in weight-to-ratio than a human would ever consume. Unless you consume like 24 12-oz cans a day I wouldn't worry about anything, other than a massive caffeine addiction.

Some of the sweeteners (polyols like xylitol, sorbitol and malinol) can have the effect of a laxative, and give you very painful stomach cramps...not a direct life threat, but not very pleasant either.

Fowler is quick to note that a study of this kind does not prove that diet soda causes obesity

Many people who drink diet sodas expect the diet soda to be some magic weight reducer so they spend 10 bucks on a Taco bell meal. If you drink a regular Coke and a healthy, balaced diet, you'll be fine. If you drink a Diet Coke and 4 Big Macs a day, then you might as well drink a regular Coke.
