Colin, maybe if you changed the business model for your business you would have something to do. For instance internet sales might be an idea, maybe get a monopoly or something going.
Only problem with internet sales is that economic monolith called Ebay that is destroying prices on the whole net. Ebay is great to buy things, but for selling, they svck. *sigh* remember the days when Ebay was just about people selling their own personal stuff they didn't need anymore, and not about companies battling it out who can be the cheapest? But that's almost enough stuff for another threads.
Besides which, our model of delivering printer supplies is not that bad, as we have gotten quite a few companies that take our goods, but the side costs are killing us (gas, electricity, car leases, employee costs). I'm still quite convinced that such a model could work in the US, but alas, there's no money to launch such a project unfortunately.
We have the same problem in Peterborough with the cable company. We had a company called Maclean-Hunter and they weren't too bad. They were bought out by Rogers (big boooooo here) and the service sucked. Then the government said Rogers owned too much and forced Rogers to sell our area to Cogeco.
All we get is higher prices and mediochre service. At least a monopoly saves us from wasting our time shopping for the best price and service.
