  • Pakistan is screwed up..

Thousands of Islamist protesters demonstrated in southern Pakistan on Sunday against a new law that reduces the burden of proof on rape victims by allowing them to seek justice without the need for four male witnesses.

The law takes the crime of rape out of the sphere of the religious laws, known as the Hudood Ordinances, and puts it under the penal code.

Under the Hudood Ordinances, which were introduced by a military ruler in 1979, a rape victim had to produce four male witnesses to prove the crime, or face the possibility of prosecution for adultery.

I wouldn't really say "is screwed up", but the fact rather is it WAS screwed up since 1979.

Its a great change in law and will come out for the good. I'm glad the government took this initiative. Hopefully they can totally abolish the Hudood Ordinance in future.

Don't worry about the protestors, every law has some protestors to it. So what if its the Islamists here and not illegal immigrants!

I think we are still pretty messed up.

I wouldn't say that Pakistan is not advanced (not as much as the western world is though but still advanced). Although this kind of law does really make things look screwed up there, then again half...actually more then half the population is COMPLETLY and i put LOTS of stress on COMPLETLY uneducated and they don't know what they are talking about when it comes to most things.

Thats the problem, when people are not educated they will believe BS like that without question. Its not to say the people are any worse or better. They just need education which they are not getting. Its to bad it has to be like this but thats how the wold is.

Yup dude and to know that one requires practical experience and not a notion based solely on media perception. I'm sure if they had an opportunity there, their high school drop out rate would be much better than here !

I know this won’t be a popular opinion (it almost got me banned by Horus on A.net) but one of the biggest problems is the current state of Islam. In many places it is still stuck in the 10th century and until their version of Martin Luther comes along and drags them into the modern era, much of the Islamic world is going to remain backwards.

Yes, i'm suuuure your right, considering that i did live in Pakistan for 8 years i think i would know what the enviornment is like, my opinion/statment is not solely on media perceptions rather on actual experiences. I was well off in PK, but others that i've seen were not, and even if you did hand them 50 RS i would bet you another 50 RS to say that it was going to drugs or various other things which does no one any good what. so. ever. If they were given an oppurtunity, correct some would try, but most would not, you have to think that most families require their young to bring in money for them so they would not even have time to actually attend schools.

Just like a nuclear reaction, it happens over and over again and unless you stop it, in this case the government stepping in (WHICH IS HIGHLY HIGHLY UNLIKLY) , then there always going to be problems in the country, although educated people do have different opinions and they have the right to, but they do not go out on streets and protest. There is a right and wrong way to deal with differences, protesting and making stupid and novice remarks about things you are ignorant about is definatly the wrong way.

                              Wow I actually agree

Its sad that many of those living in that part of the world who do yearn for freedom and choice cannot have it, since the voices of oppression and fanatacism are so much louder...

It also sucks that we royally fucked up our chance to change Iraq into a more forward thinking nation...
