  • Getting to and from the North Pole

I guess I could have put this in the Aviation Discussion Forum, but wasn't sure. So decided that this one was a safe bet!

In 2015, I intend to set off on a two and a half year journey, from the North Pole, through the Americas, to the South Pole. My question is, would flying to the North Pole be an option? This includes touching down at the North Pole. What's the best place to fly from or too? I know it's been done. Would this result in the aircraft being stripped down to being nothing more than a flying gas can?

I do like the idea of flying out from Hammerfest, Norway, flying to the North Pole, touching down, before heading to Nord, Greenland. But this is quite some distance (like, over 1600 nm).

Any kind of advice/suggestions/info/whatever would be appreciated!

Sounds like a cool trip. I think you may have a better shot at flying to the South pole.

The South Pole's not a problem. But I'm determined to reach the North Pole, too.

So youve already figured out how to get home from the south pole? The farthest northernmost permanent airport is Alert, but that is still 830 KM south of the North pole.

For the South Pole, there's always Adventure Network - even if that were the only option, it's still a solution.
