Only thing I can recommend is shop around. Look for the one with the lowest interest rate and preferably without a fee. I would strongly suggest involving your parents in the decision as they probably know what they're looking for a bit more than you. Once you do get it, be extremely responsible with it. Don't use it as your primary way of buying things and make sure you can pay more than the minimum payment on most months.

Credit cards are evil, but if you use it smartly they're a good way to start building credit so you can get loans for bigger things later in life.

I have a debit card... works just the same, except the money gets pulled from your checking account instead of paying a bill at the end of he month.

Honestly I would stick to a debit card if I were you. Unless you are buying something very expensive ASAP having the cash to cover a purchase in your account is probably safest.

I just signed up with Bank of America today and transferred most of my funds there. My mom's using the checking account for flying mostly. We got the Debit/ATM card so I guess that's all I'll need. Does it establish credit that way or will I need to get a credit card to start that?

A debit card will not establish credit since you won't be paying any bills to the bank. If you have an apartment or any utilities, or car payment in your name - that will establish credit without even having a credit card.

PAY ATTENTION to the interest rate. Anything above 9.9% is too high. You may see one with a low intro rate like 2.9% but they may boost it up to 20% after a year so watch out.

I would avoid credit cards if at all possible. It's so easy to get in over your head. If you use them, do your best to pay it off monthly.

I echo what FlyingPhotog said. A credit card is good for the big or unexpected purchases, however you must keep an eye on your spending and what you do each month with the balance.

Don't get multiple cards and stay away from company cards (like Sears or J.C.Penny) as they have even higher interest rates. Get a card that gives you points, but again keep an eye on any fees they may have to have the card in your wallet.

I only use my credit card for expensive purchases such as electrical items and flight tickets (since I earn miles as I spend) and for everything else I use my debit card, and then generally will only use it if I know I can afford to pay it off. I'll use it in situations where I don't want to give someone direct access to my bank account which is the case with a debit card. Good thing about having a credit card and using it sensibly is that you can build up a great credit rating.

The way it works with my debit card is that when something is charged the money goes on hold and I can see it in my online banking account information. It takes a while for the funds to actually be released, so if something doesn't seem right I would call the bank and ask what's up. Personally, I don't really see the need to for a credit card, the debit card works fine, and if you need to buy something, you can make sure you have enough in your checking account through online banking (if you don't have enough, then maybe you should rethink your purchase). Other than that... I generally don't have a problem carrying cash around to pay for stuff if I don't want to give someone my debit card, but it's come in handy the past few days when I've needed food and only had like $1.50 in my wallet.

As for building credit... are there any other ways to do it besides having a credit card, like paying off a cellphone bill in time or something? Or what happens if you go for a home loan but don't have a credit line?

I'm going to go against most of what people here are saying...

I think it is a good idea to get a credit card early to build your credit history. Your first card will probably be some crappy $500 limit card so you can't really go over your head with spending.

I carry little cash with me, and do most of my spending on credit cards, even for stuff like coffee. It is a better way of keeping track of your spendings, because you can view it all in your account activity history.
You also get more buyer protection because it is much easier to request Visa/MC/Amex for a charge back when something goes wrong, rather than go through the hassle to get actual cash back.

Right now I have an Air Miles AMEX card as primary, a cash back reward MC as backup, and platimum MC (which I rarely use) for big purchases because it offeres purchase protection and extended OEM warranty.
