  • Rugby World Cup 2007

OK - so the "other oval ball game" that is not the American or Australian version of Rugby Union (League is not considered here) has it's World Cup about to hit the headlines in the near future.

So, I am wondering how many JP readers/contributors would show interest in such an online discussion via this forum. Well, lets test the water (All the English readers residing in the Midlands - I guess you have had water up to your necks at the mo - so you are excused in any "water testing" exercises).

So, where do I fit in and what can I discuss to "kick off" this discussion - and we score points for the usage of Rugby Terminology within our posts. 1995 and South Africa hosts the W/C - Dream start when we nailed the Aussies at Newlands. I was at the final when Joel nailed the drop to take the trophy. We came pretty close in 1999 and caused English teeth to gnash when Jannie de Beer slotted FIVE drop goals to sink England. Since then we in South Africa have battled to balance transformation against results and have had mixed results. OK, so 2007 RWC is about to hit us and all of us locally are wondering just who the hell would be selected. Was it Jake's (White) "dream team" or would it be the ANC's version of a "dream team". Well we were absolutly gob smacked when the squad was announced last Saturday (after the "All Bleks" (as Kiwi's would pronounce) slapped the "Bleedin' Wallabies" in Auckland. Jake was given HIS "dream team" - all selections were blessed and sanctioned by all and sundry - well in public that is. So, we have a squad picked based on form as opposed to "quotas" - well Jake - now you have to "Haal uit en wys" - for you non South African types - literally means that Jake must now "haul out (his penis) and show (how big it is) - in other words
"Show us what you have told us".

No team ever selected will please all the people all of the time - however I am certainly pleased with the squad as are many of the people with whom we have had this discussion with - players picked on merit/form - what more could we ask for.

So, how ironic is this. Eddie Moans (Jones) is currently working with Jake White AND next inline in Jake's sights is Clive Woodward, this for our pool game vs "HinGA Land" and possibly "dem Aussies (oi, oi, oi)" in a quarter final.

Can you IMAGINE all the Aussie "Strine" that will cause ?????

Anyway, our local "things rugby" (and other sport) can be read here

Should be an interesting tournament - Go 'Bokke !!!!!!!!

Hi Gerardo - Hmmm - no takers from our English, Scottish, Irish and Welsh friends. I watched (on TV) the English give the Welsh "2nd stringers" a huge hiding on Saturday. It would not be advisable for England to be taken lightly, we play them in our pool game and that result will determine who we play in the quarters - i am assuming we will win our other two pool games.

As far as our Aussie and Kiwi spotters go who may have an interest in the 2007 RWC, well it may be a bit early to get comments from them, it takes a bit of time for them to "wake up". As for the rest, IE: Argentinians, Pacific Islanders, Japan, Canada, USA, Portugal, Italy and Romania JP contributors, I wonder if they even know they are participating in the RWC ??

Pool A (I have to back the 'Boks to win this pool - England will not be a walk in the park)
      1 England
      2 Samoa
      3 South Africa
      4 Tonga
      5 USA

Pool B (I don't see the Aussies loosing any games here, hopefully Canada will do it's usual and rough up a few Wallabies)
      1 Australia
      2 Canada
      3 Fiji
      4 Japan
      5 Wales

Pool C (Kiwis to win this one, no problem)
      1 Italy
      2 New Zealand
      3 Portugal
      4 Romania
      5 Scotland

Pool D (Hmm - The French should have a small worry about Argentina, and a slightly bigger worry about Ireland.)
      1 Argentina
      2 France
      3 Georgia
      4 Ireland
      5 Namibia

Anyway, for SA, we lost Pierre Spies our "game breaker" No 8 - has blood clots on the lungs and will not make the tour at all - may never play rugby again either. Andre Pretoriu's injury has been sorted out so he now needs to get fit.

Interesting comments from Jake White re saturdays "friendly" between England and Wales

Have fun and remember "Go 'Bokke"

Hmmmm - we have been hearing this comment since the beginning of the 1995 world cup - and, as yet, the AB's have only won one WCup. I would not be surprised if they do not win it this time either - but, yes, they are - annoyingly - a VERY good team.

No, sorry for my dumb questions, but I'm a complete greenhorn when it comes to Rugby. I usually watch a bit, if possible here in Switzerland, but here, what counts is football (the game, where the ball is actually played with FEET) and ice hockey. Oh, I forgot SAILING of course, specially America's Cup class

Anyway, my main question: what is Rugby League and Rugby Union and Rugby World Cup?

            Cheerio and thanks in advance

You swiss couldnt sail for shit without all those New Zealanders! (One fairly grumpy Kiwi here)

Rugby league is fucked up where they insist on stopping play everytime a guy gets tackled.

Rugby Union is the game played in the world cup, where, well it doesnt matter it still sucks.

(Have you worked out i prefer sailing to rugby yet?)

NZ are chokers when it comes to the real prize, France for me and Italy won't be a pushover in their pool, they have the strongest pack of all the teams mentioned.
