Yep, SA played fantastically throughout the entire cup. I love watching them, their forwards are controlled and strong, and everytime their backs get the ball there is an explosion on the pitch, and Francois??? He has got a massive boot!
Well done South Africa, a thoroughly well deserved win.
Well, well, well - it was a nailbiting game. Where does one start ? We moseyed off to BokTown at Monte casino (here in Johannesburg) to watch (as we did for the semis). To say the atmosphere was "buzzing" was an understatement. Walking around our local shopping mall on Saturday morning and driving around doing my Saturday morning chores - it was "green". The vast majority of folks were wearing Bok kit or at least at least one piece of green clothing. Flags banners all over the place. The obvious highlight at BokTown prior to kick off, "Madiba" (Nelson Mandella) made an appearence. I was at the 95 final at Ellis Park, and nothing changed - the "Father of the Nation" was honoured by a VERY noisy reception - "Nelson, Nelson, Nelson" and on it went.
OK, the game was a typical final - no risk rugby, and errors were capitilased on. England - take nothing away from England - despite the pool game drubbing, very few people expected a "run in the park" come the final. There was a tremendous amount of respect for the English and the sheer "never say die" attitude that they had from that game on - the tension of the final was felt throughout the game by ourselves - believe it, I only "relaxed" once we got to 76 minutes of game time. Anyway, we did it. The afterparty was SUPER, eventually got to bed at 02:45 this morning (Sunday).
NOW, let's just take a minute to point out one HUGE and TELLING factor.
After the game - so far I have yet to hear of any hooliganism, on local news and on SYK/BBC et al. If there is ONE THING our football (soccer) fans can learn from Rugby - pre and post match behaviour - GO RUGBY. Both sets of supporters had a blast after the game, together and in great spirit.
So, in parting, where does this leave us here in SA ? We have 2010 football World Cup ahead of this - it's now time for all of us to embrace this tournament and collectivly make this work, and BAFANA-BAFANA, go do it !!!

Well done South Africa Springboks you deserve to win, although it was a typical no risk rugby final, the boks showed in the pool game what it means to play "RUGBY' (36-0)
