  • Global Warming - Let's just find another planet

Does anyone really give a shit? Really, do people get up every morning and proactively try and help the planet? I still question weather global warming is being caused by us...every time there is a study about it, there is another study about how it's not caused by us...then Al Gore gets up and people start to care, companies market products that "help" global warming and make money. Car companies are selling hybrids like hot cakes...

If the science isn't really sounds...why the hell are we busting our balls over it if it may turn out to be false?...Why don't we work really hard to get a definitive answer. Why?

I for one, think it's not all cut out to be what they are telling us, and some people are getting a little bit too wealthy off it.

    What's your take?

I for one am more concerned with stuff like this...http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_P..._Garbage_Patch

It doesn't really matter whether it is caused by us or not. If the phenomenon is real and the predictions accurate, we need to do something about it.

Well, Rabbi...if it's not caused by us, how can we stop it. Maybe it's out of our control...maybe we are just all SOL...

Do you think the current level of efficiency is moving at a pace that we can say is productive? Cars have gotten better over the years, planes are more efficient. More products are made in a more efficient manner....

???? I'm not sure that I follow the logic - it has been suggested that reducing the emissions of greenhouse gases would help....

Maybe, but I'd strongly recommend not giving up just yet....

I think Global Warming is bull$hit. Now I know I will get criticised for this, but it is my opinion and honestly, I don't give a rats a$$ about what happens to the planet/environment. I don't mind the climite getting warmer... time to get more that only three months of my fav season - summer.
          A. Gore is really makin me more and more mad, when he keeps on getting all those prizes for yapping around about global warming...comon he obviously does that for popularity...

You seem to be in two minds about this.

Rabbi...have you seen "The Great Global Warming Swindle". Interesting documentary about it. Watch it along with The Gore Bots dog-and-pony show about Climate Change (Al Gore just rubs me the wrong way....about EVERYTHING).

I haven't seen either of them. However, the information that I have seen (from both camps) leads me to believe that it would be unwise for us to ignore the question.... and that global warming may not simply equate to balmy summers for the rich.

Global Warming is just an excuse to cause paranoia around the globe and a reason for companies to make everything more expensive and for the governments to restrict our lives even more. Now granted, it can never be bad to do something helping the climate, like not having every single electronical appliance on 24/7 stand-by, but does the survival of mankind really depend on whether the German Autobahn will all have speed limits or not? Will the earth be saved if everyone is forced to buy expensive electricity made from wind, water and solar power, instead of the cheap but "dirty" fossil energy and the "dangerous" nuclear power? Is it really helpful to buy local goods from your neighbor farmer that cost 3-5 times as much as the stuff imported from a Mediterranean country? All just dumb excuses to fvck customers and taxpayers in the a$$.

The issue with global warming is your perspective and your timescale.

In looking at temperature change, think about the time period over which it has changed. Here it is where I live : over the last 12 hours the temperature has gone up. Over the last 48 hours the temperature has gone down. Over the last 20 years the temperature has gone up. Over the last 11,000 years the temperature has also gone up. Over the last million years the temperature has gone down.

We are in a warming trend which has been lasting 11,000 years. Within that there have been changes both ways in periods of decades or centuries.

It has been very difficult to say that man has or has not contributed to the problem. All I can say is that the overwhelming consensus of peer-reviewed scientific research suggests that the world is getting warmer and that human beings probably have contributed to this (it is, after all, suggestive that CO2 parts per million are higher now than for hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of years and have doubled in a century and a half). We know that CO2 traps heat, and we know that human activities also make CO2. It's not unreasonable to assume that mankind may be making a marginal contribution, at best.

We also know that becoming warmer in a period of global warming is the least of our problems : parts of the world will actually get colder, coastal communities in many parts of the world may be submerged, there is stress on species and biodiversity, there are new patterns and spread of diseases and bacteria and on and on.....

What we do know is that the world has adapted in the past to gradual climate change. It is the pace of change that is threat. We know that abrupt temperature changes are like flipping a switch - they can be very damaging and cause a lot of stress to environments. Regardless of whether it's human caused or not, it seems reasonable for us to see whether we can do something to counter these threats.

It is a very significant issue. A large segment of the population does not or will not understand this. These people tend to be on the conservative side of the political spectrum, so Gore is not the best person for spreading messages on this topic. But if your child is threatened with a life-endangering condition, and you take 100 medical opinions, ansd 98% say take Cure A and 2% say take Cure B, what do you do ?

For sure, more research is needed. There is still a lot we don't know. And, of course, I'd agree that there will be a lot of political and commercial bandwagons which will push for their own short-term advantages, and no doubt mistakes will be made (eg. the ethanol boom perhaps ?), corruption and scams will operate, and taxes will rise to little avail. We will need to separate out the remedies, which will be very controversial, from the basic problem, which seems increasingly in little doubt.

I can only imagine what would happen if that pic went to 2010.

Here's something to disprove global warming.

I have to say I agree with you completely that man made global warming is a crock of BS. I also watched The Great Global Warming Swindle, and thought it was great. All these enviro freak hippies talk about their studies of how it's been the warmest on record, blah blah blah, but records have only been kept of speck of time in a planet that is billions of years old. Climates have changed in the past without help from humans, and they will continue to change and there is not a god damn thing anyone is going to be able to do about it. If hippies want to do whatever they think is going to help that's fine with me, but it becomes a problem when government takes more control over people's lives (raises taxes, regulations, etc) because of some enviro nutjobs. At least for all the things the Bush administration screwed up, one thing they did right was not go along with the Kyoto Protocol nonsense. If anything, we have become more efficient as a whole, and cleaner than in the past, so I really don't see a problem.

And Al Gore. The guy unloads his BS and tells everyone to conserve, and his house uses more energy than anyone else's. Typical elitist. I tell the rest of you what to do, and as long as you sacrifice, I can have more for myself.

I for one am sick of hearing about it. Although it is fun to tell environmentalists that you don't believe in it, and get a reaction. And it would really be nice if it did get a few degrees warmer. Would be nice to have it be in the 50's and 60's in January like it was a few days ago before it got cold again, and if it's sizzling in the summer, that's what AC is for!

Thinking of what is happening as "Global Warming" is sheer abject stupidity. It is climate change. The earth is not static, and things do change wheter we like it or not, whether we caused it or not, and whether we can stop it or not. We are nowhere near historical extremes (Pleistocene lows, Oligocene and Cretaceous highs) and I'm fairly certain that there is nothing that can be done to stop it either. The current fashion of carbon this and that will produce reductions akin to pissing on a forest fire.
May a plethora of uncultivated palaeontologists raise the dead in a way that makes your blood boil

Well, none of the events reported in that thread prove that there is or is not any global warming. What happens in an individual year in specific places on the planet does not affect the global temperature trend. Also, as I said above, global warming is likely to bring cooling in some regions, which is why people now talk more of 'climate change'. And what we do know about current climate change patterns is that there are more extremes and volatility around the world in both weather and climate.
