    If it was my date, I would chose to take a cab (or go by car).

    As if another example of government stupidity were needed, J should know that at one time, it was contemplated to build the Ronkonkoma RR Station and the Islip Airline Terminal in the same building, permitting a transfer without even going outdoors.


    The rest as you point out, it history. And now the ramp has almost crumbled and Southwest has concerns about debris being sucked into their 737s.

    One time I had a meeting in Jamaca, NY and so arranged to fly home via ISP. I had checked various websites and discovered the airport was conveniently right next to the Long Island Railroad Ronkonkoma station with connnecting bus service. Checking the schedule I found I'd arrive by train right about the time of the hourly bus and so made my plans. When I stepped off the train the bus apparently had just left and since I didn't have the Harvard mathematician with me I decided to walk. Heck the air field must be "just over behind those trees" beyond the parking lot! Well it was but I hadn't botherd to consider the location of the terminal. It too was "just over behind those trees" and at the other side of the runways.

    I must have cut quite a figure carrying my bags as I schlepped along the muddy paths adjacent to Smithtown Avenue and Vetrans Memorial Highway. However it took me about 55 minutes so I beat the bus!

    How come?

    Lazy option is best when waiting for the bus

    Quote: 23 January 2008: Ever lose patience waiting for a bus and decided to walk instead? Next time, stick around, it's nearly always the best strategy.

    Scott Kominers, a mathematician at Harvard University, and his colleagues derived a formula for the optimal time that you should wait for a tardy bus at each stop en route before giving up and walking on. "Many mathematicians probably ponder this on their way to work, but never get round to working it out," he says.

    The team found that the solution was surprisingly simple. When both options seem reasonably attractive, the formula advises you to choose the "lazy" option: wait at the first stop, no matter how frustrating (www.arxiv.org/abs/0801.0297).

    The formula does break down in extreme cases, Kominers says, when the time interval between buses is longer than an hour, for example, and your destination is only a kilometre away.

    If you do choose to walk, you should make your decision before you start waiting, he says. You will still reach your destination later than the bus you'd have caught, but it will be much less frustrating than waiting for a while and then watching the bus shoot by. "It certainly has changed the way I travel," Kominers says.
