We actually in the midwest pronounce it as YOU-STON with a slight H sound at the begining. I was taught it is never HEW-STON and HOWSTON is not the correct way to pronounce it.

Anything with an H in front of a u sound is usually pronounce with a YOU, like Human-Youman, or Houston- Youston, etc etc Except House thats HOWS and not Youse LMAO

I have a better question: why is Humble, TX, right next to Houston, pronounced "Umble"?

I was just going to mention that.

Another great Texas town is Mexia. It almost always gets pronounced mɛksiə (sounds like Mex-E-Ah) although the correct pronunciation is "muh-HAY-uh."

Houston County in GA in pronounced Howston. That's the way I learned to say it. Though us rednecks don't have the best grammar.

Houston is pronounced Hew-ston because it was named for Sam Houston and that's how he pronounced it!

That's for Houston, Texas. NOT Houston County in GA. That one is pronounced Howston.

Because the English language makes no sense. I am so glad I don't have to learn it as a second language.

Paul is right with the Sam Houston story.

Right here in Jacksonvull, everbody says it "Hue-ston", with special emphasis on the H if you're a real native.
(BTW- above post structured to better convey regional accent)

I don't think the OP ever meant Houston County, GA...
