Looks like you may get to see some fresh Alaskan snow on the ground. Juneau just got almost a foot of snow last night

Is snow pretty rare up there this time of year? We don't go to Juneau until July 3rd on our cruise, so we'll see then. In Juneau we're whale watching with Captain Larry, who I heard is one of the best guides. What I'm really hoping for is an aurora display.

July's definitely not the best time to see aurora borealis, but perhaps you might get lucky

Cool. Whale watching is a big thing there. When going into the Juneau, the ferries usually have to pick their way through whale watching boats.

As Avro said, the chances of seeing the auroras are pretty slim. It happens to be more of a winter thing.

Aururas tend not to be visible in daylight... unless you want to stay up till 3 in the morning when the sun sets

Yea usually when you are on your way home from the bars/pubs the lights are pretty good.

I wasn't thinking... I forgot they have like 20 hours of daylight up there in the summer.

We can replace auroras with fireworks

Does your boat stop in Haines or Skagway? If it is Skagway you may get to see our local display because it seem like the ships cruise by about midnight.

We come to Skagway July 3rd. I need to figure out which excursion we want to do there. Any suggestions? We're at sea all day on the 4th. I'm hoping there's some fireworks on the ship, but for safety reasons I would expect not.

Hmmmm.....I dont know what all is offered. But here are a few things you could try:
                    • Take a helicopter up on a glacier and go dog sledding.
                    • I think that this season Promech air will be offering a glacier flightseeing flight in a Twotter.
                    • If they get the boat up and running, supposedly the glacier point excursion is pretty cool.
                    • You could do a fishing charter.
                    • Take a boat over to Haines and do an Eagle preserve tour, or just wander around Haines.
                    • There are a couple hikes you could do to the upper and lower dewey lakes.
Like I said, I dont know what all is offered, but you could try those.

I'd love to get on a glacier, even just to hike around. The cruise line wants $282 per person for 40 minutes of flying and 40 minutes of glacier time.
