Is Herzegovina a country?

No, it's not a country, or a state or a republic...

It's just a region of the country called Bosnia and Herzegovina.

So, why is it in the country's name? Well, because Bosnia is the other region -- so it wouldn't be fair to call the whole country Bosnia (it being one region) and not mention the other "equal" region.

On the other hand, Serbia and Montenegro were two separate republics in the former Yugoslavia..

At least in Germany, it's fairly common to have state names that consist of the names of two regions: Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Schleswig-Holstein, Saxony-Anhalt, North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate and Baden-Wuerttemberg all are one entity, but encompass more than one historic region. Those states owe their existance to the Allies, who created administrative regions that were (and are) a lot less chaotical than the dozens of counties, duchies and principalities scattered on the map of Germany before.

I have always wondered why the former Yugoslav republic is called Bosnia and Herzegovina or Bosnia-Herzegovina, what is the status of Herzegovina? on the map it just shows up as a region in Bosnia and not a state so why is its name included with Bosnia? in the case of Serbia-Montenegro both are seperate states and shown as such on the map yet they form the federation of the former Yugoslavia now known as Serbia and Montenegro. can anyone explain?
