  • Drinking and Driving...

I would like to share an experience with you all, to do with drinking and driving. As you know some people have brushes with the authorities on their way home. Well, I for one have done something about it. The other night I was out for a dinner and a few drinks, and having had far too much wine and, knowing full well I was over the limit, I did something I have never done before. I took a bus home. I arrived home safely and without incident, which was a real surprise, as I had never driven a bus before.

Right up to the last eight words I was expecting something deeply thought provoking and sincere.

If it 'ain't broken........ Don't try to mend it !

As in a bus? Like an Airbus?

I didn't know what to reply if it were serious or a joke but i've decided on this reply:

Aaah Jan.. you've got an excuse, you're only a lad, but that is the beauty of irony... and why it's altogether far more humorous (and insightful) than stating something more obvious.

Irony is a language device which is often not understood, in American culture for example, and many think the word just means "funny", which it patently doesn't. The use of irony can be incredibly amusing, as here, but it means:

              1. the expression of one's meaning by language of the opposite or a different tendency.

              2. the ill-timed or perverse occurence of an event or circumstance that would in itself be desirable.

              (Oxford Refernce Dictionary)

The really, really amusing thing about this one (it isn't mine) is that it plays on both those primary and secondary meanings.

Hope you find the explanation interesting and useful

In about 20% of all traffic accidents, alcohol is involved.
Meaning that in 80% alcohol is NOT involved!

That shows: Driving WITH alcohol is much more save!
