If he's alive is not important. By directing the 9/11 terrorist acts he signed his own death sentence. If he's alive, it's a bonus for him.
I'm sure he already took appropriate measures to ensure funding for his terrorist network after his death. The support for terror against the US is far greater among certain groups of people. The death of their charismatic leader will only inflame their rage even more. the war on terror will never end, terrorists are the invisible enemy.
Security is at a pathetic level (I recently experienced this at an airport). The next strike will be just as hard as 9/11, maybe even worse. It's just a matter of time. Enough idiots one one side, combined with another bunch of idiots to piss them off = complete chaos.

It's not only that Saddam Hussein is evil, but the US made some terrible mistakes with Iraq too.

Joe,
America supported Bin Laden because he sought to fight the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. At the time it was 1979 and the cold war was raging as others stated. Well, in the 1980s Bin Laden didn't think too badly of the US. It was only until the Gulf War that Bin Laden turned against America and resorted to terrorism. I think he went bezerk over the fact that the US declared war on Iraq who it backed when it declared war on Iran as wel as the fact that the US and placed troops in Saudi Arabia. I think it was the latter that angered him the most. Odd I know. He's a strange and evil man.

Kinda sounds like those childhood superhero stories, where one villain was hell-bent on world domination.

if america supported bin laden in his war againest the soviets, supplied him with equipment and stuff why does he hate america so much?
It possible looked that they were no potential enemies and that with those 'gifts' they could keep them friendly.
But if the US ever had readed the biography of Saddam Hussein, they would never supported him.

Also, the US supported Bin laden in his war against the Sovjets in Afghanistan in that period. They supplied them even with Stingers!
