A powerful explosion has hit Saudi Arabia's capital, Riyadh.
It was not clear what caused the blast - at about midnight (2100 GMT) - which shook nearby buildings near Riyadh's diplomatic quarter.
US diplomatic missions in Saudi Arabia were closed after "credible evidence" of a threat and the UK embassy in Bahrain issued a similar warning.
Thirty-five people were killed in a string of suicide attacks in May on a Western compound in Riyadh.
"I heard an explosion here in the diplomatic quarter. It sounded nearby," an unnamed diplomat told Reuters news agency.
An American embassy spokeswoman quoted by Associated Press news agency said the explosion had been outside the diplomatic quarter.
1. Instead of Al Qaeda attacking its "enemies" (The West), in the last 2 1/2 years the best they can do it blow up stuff in the Middle East and North Africa, the very areas from which most of their support is drawn.
2. On a similiar note, if all they can do is launch attacks in the Middle East and North Africa, it says to me that a lot of Al Qaeda's ability has been disrupted or destroyed.
Aparently, the target was a compound that housed mostly Saudis and other Arabs, not foreigners. Didn't they recently say that they were only going to focus on the "infidel" (i.e. Western) elements in Saudi?
By the way I just looooove the BBC's use of "scare quotes". They never cease to amaze.
Three explosions rocked an affluent residential neighborhood just outside Riyadh, Saudi Arabia Saturday, one day after the U.S. Embassy warned of a looming terror threat. As many as 28 people were killed and 100 wounded, many of them children, diplomatic sources told journalists.
Al-Qaida has stated in the past they're against the Saudi regime and other "pro-western" regimes in the middle east. Still, this attack doesn't seem to make very much sense at the moment, unless the people it housed were Saudi Gov. workers. My guess is they were gonna attack the U.S. embassy or some similar target, but after the State dept.'s warning yesterday there was probably a last-min. change in plans.

The one major point I missed is where anyone said that Al Qaeda is the only terrorist group in the world...?
And Iceman, can we have an example of one of the quotes that you say scared you so much? Don't worry, you're safe here!
I walked across an empty land
I knew the pathway like the back of my hand
I felt the earth beneath my feet
Sat by the river and it made me complete
Usama bin Laden's terrorist network. The ones who attacked the WTC.
The ones who are suspected to have carried out the attacks on 9-11.
"The Director also sets the record straight on what would happen if oxygen masks were to drop from the ceiling: The passengers freak out with abandon, instead of continuing to chat amiably, as though lunch were being served, like they do on those in-flight safety videos."
"Suspected"? They admitted it themselves! Who do you think is responsible?
This is news to me. I never heard about them admitting it!!!
Where did you pick that up?
"The Director also sets the record straight on what would happen if oxygen masks were to drop from the ceiling: The passengers freak out with abandon, instead of continuing to chat amiably, as though lunch were being served, like they do on those in-flight safety videos."
I watch the news. Never heard that. There is no confirmation that Al-Qaeda actually did it.
However, I am not saying that there is a strong (very very very strong) possibility, and probability that they did it.
I am only saying that nothing is 100% sure at this time.
Hell, some people still suspect the jews...!
Not attacking you or anything...
