  • Greg goes to the Udvar-HAzy Center. (pics included)

I went to the new NASM Udvar-Hazy center on Sat. 12/20/03 and decided to post some pictures to show it off. (Please note: All photo's copyright Greg Dewey 2003.)

Waiting in line to pay the $12 parking fee.

Sign at the entrance to the museum.

The 7 story observation tower, as viewed from the parking lot. The view from the tower is worth the $12 parking fee.

    Enola Gay.

Me, posing in front of a Piper Cub.

    Me, shooting an F-4.(not pictured)

Me, posing on the west side of the observation tower.

Concorde and Dash 80 tails posing together.

    FedEx Falcon and Concorde posing.

VS A346 touching down at IAD. Shot from the Observation tower at 300mm.

LH 744 framed by museum walkway and streetlight. 75mm shot from in front of the museum.

Hope you enjoyed these shots as mush as I enjoyed taking them. I would happily go to this museum again...even for $12.

looks like a 300mm isnt long enuff for the Obs. tower at the museam. Probably need a 400-500mm for a nice close up. How about the aprking lot, can you get close up shots using a 300mm at the museam?

Looks like a camera similar to Kilroy's is needed to get something good.

That FedEx Falcon looks familiar. Didn't that a/c used to be at the main branch? The museum looks incredible. I'm planning a visit there in early April.

              tommyalf,

Parking is $12 for all day but the admission to the museam is free. Would you rather pay for parking and museam or one of each? Somehow they have to make their money. So it's not to expensive for a worthwile trip.

The museum is located on the airport at IAD. If they didn't charge for parking then people taking flights out would use the museum lot as a free long term parking lot and just take the airport shuttle to the terminal. There would never be any space left for museum visitors. They pretty much had to charge more than the long term lots in order to prevent that from happening.

Gonna have to go check it out as well.

I did some work on the #2 engine on the Enola Gay when it was in San Diego being rebuilt. Nothing major, just some safety wiring, but it was cool to have worked on a legend.

This is 300mm from the tower. You can get the planes when they cross in front of the tower but landing shots you need a 400mm+. The good thing about the tower is it is warm, you can the see the planes a long way off, there are a lot of fellow enthusiast to talk to, and you can get the touchdown shots. the problems are little kids being underfoot, the windows are tinted so my pics from the tower had to be brightened, and there is some glare on the windows.

This is 300m from the parking lot. It is much brighter because you don't have the tint. it might be a good idea to pay the $12 bucks and just stand in the parking lot all day. :P

I like the lighting in the Space Shuttle hanger. It give a nice mood.

Here's the F-4 for Jeff. A bit soft so I didn't upload it. Another problem at the museum is it is dark. I had to use the flash for most of my shots.

Im sorry, but there is only one entrance to the museam and that is on Rt. 28 where Rt. 50 intersects which is like 3 miles from the terminal at IAD. If you fly to IAD, the only way to go is to take a cab or a shuttle bus which you will pay a fee.

I will probably go there the day after Xmas and do some shooting at the observation tower. $12 isnt too bad if you are there all day. Its worth it.
