That's a gorgeous photo of the Moon, Jeff... if that window wasn't open on the side of the shot, I'd be tempted to make it my desktop background.

It actually looked o.k. until I compressed it.
Fun stuffand everyone said it was a hoax, that reminds me, the US IS going back to the moon and the newest destination announced by NASA is Mars, service starts sometime in about 20 years

I tried one with the D30, but at only 300mm, with this soft lens, and 3MP...it wasn't that good at all. But shooting the moon around 1/250th f/6.7 worked ok for me. ISO 100

That explains it. Here is a tip you can try.
Expose for the moon only, and it will be o.k., the sky will be dark as it should be. Do not try and use any type exposure that averages the frame.
Use a tripod, you should not need iso800 to "shoot the moon"... :P

ISO 800
Shutter I think was 4000 because the moon turned out too bright when I had a slow shutter speed like 10 seconds. It looks grainy because I over sharpened it since it came out extremely soft un-processed.

It's a nice shot, but I agree with clovis..what settings did you use? That shot looks way over processed.
