  • Does you're family/friends think you're an idiot?

Okay so I'm not rich(far from it).But I have all my bills paid and no big debts. So I spend some of MY money on a hobby that I enjoy and everyone says I'm an idiot!!I paid about US$1,500 for:

    Canon D60
    Canon 50mm 1.8
    Sigma 170-500mm APO

I know plenty of guys that spend thousands on bass boats, fishing rods and other supplies.

I know plenty of guys that spend thousands on crossbows, shotguns and other hunting supplies.(even saw a guy lay down $70 for 2 bottles of deer piss!!!)

But nobody says anything about that.

The only person that don't think i'm an idiot is my wife(she paid for half the Sigma lens) although she does think i'm crazy for getting up early on my days off and going to the airport when its below freezing.

So,how does you're friends and family feel about you're hobby??

At home we all fly quite a lot, so it is such a normal thing for them to see my hobby and how much I do like it...

My aunt thinks taking pictures at the airport is stupid. Her remarks just encourage me though and i laugh at some of the stuff she says aganst aviation b/c it's so ignorant and dumb .

My parents have gotten used to it. Plus they should be happy cuz instead of going out and getting in trouble like so many kids are doing, I'de rather be at the airport in the cold or whatever WX there is taking pictures. And thats a good thing.

My parents dont understand why I want to lay down 1500-2000 this summer for a camera, and neither do my roommates...

            They just dont understand....

My family understands, but not my friends. "You went to LA just for the airport!?!?" <-- the response I got last week.

Think about this: they've paid for their house (Average= $200,000+). Isn't that weird? Why not get an apartment instead of a house. Don't let it get you down.

You think an apartment is a smart investment?

Sure Yes, more than I thought and most dissapointingly from some aviation minded and versed relatives and friends. They just did not and still don't understand as far the survivors are concerned, that my plans call to convert the hobby into a full time occupation.
                      The most distressing cases ;
                      My late grandfather,
-who was a flyer with the airforce in the 20s
-who again flew as f/e in military transports and bombers as a member of the FreeFrenchAirForce starting as soon as June 1940, until demob ...
-who kept a keen interest in aviation until death at age 98.
-the rare positive point : he has been instrumental in keeping my flight records regarding the earlier years, I acknowledge when Germain Guillen said that on this day, at this year, between A to B, I flew a Connie, sure the airplane was a Constellation and nothing else !!!
My mother (her daughter) who worked as a travel agent for a very long time and who took my wishes into good considerations and made her best to fullfil them, for instance : "Well this time, I would like flying the Sabena Boeing 707" "No Problem, watch for the ticket (at agent's best rate) coming....."
But the SPOTTER side just can't be admitted, especially since she retired from this job in 1987 and moved up back to France !!! For a while, I used to drive when going to visit her, well the best way to rotten a week-end was to say : " Yes I had a fairly good drive, I could squeeze a first stop at Satolas and other one at Cointrin. I must tell you I plan hitting back the road Sunday morning..."
"Why in the morning, and so early"
                      "Cuz' I have plans ..."
                      Regards
                      Alain

I was being sarcastic. Okay, how about this: Why not buy a Yugo instead of a Nissan? It's cheaper.
