Christians to observe token strike over YMCA issue

KARACHI: The Christian community of Karachi will observe token strike on Sunday in front of Karachi Press Club against the discriminating attitude meted out to the community particularly over the issue of Young Men Christian Association (YMCA).

Yousaf Gil, Director Board of YMCA and minority member of City Council told PPI that token strike would be observed under the auspices of Christian Commission of Justice and Peace, striving for attaining rights of the community.

He said that community would register their protest over the illegal and unconstitutional registration of an organisation with the same name, which according to him was illegal under Society Act 1860 and Social Welfare Act Sindh.

"Inaction in the matter of YMCA raises many questions in the mind of community which is constantly raising voice over the occupation of YMCA premises by an organisation with fake registration," he added.

He said that some vested interests were behind this state of affairs, which had the patronage of some influential figures and had no fear of any legal action.

He informed that a delegation of community would soon visit Governor Sindh to inform him about the matter and hoped that governor would take action in the interest of community.

This shows how Pakistani government claims to be a muslim government and uses that title for outlawed activities. As a muslim, I feel the Pakistanis, both muslim and nonmuslims should take action against this injustice as Islam teaches equal rights for minorities.

I don't know what is going on in Pakistan right now, haven't been there for a long time. But yes all the muslims should do something about it. The government in Pakistan is very corupt, the people are also. If the government doesn't want to spend the time fixing it then the country is screwed. If a small group tries to do something they aren't going to make that much of a difference.
