Sh*t, my bathroom flooded!

The bathroom in my apartment is completed flooded with raw human waste. Not only the floor but the fricken bathtub had some nasty stuff in it. Turns out the stuff people flush down the toilet at my apartment unit (four separate apartments) goes in a pipe that runs right under my apartment. The pipe was clogged and everytime someone who lived in adjacent apartments flushed the john, everything came out in my bathroom. I got maintenance to unplug the pipe but still have a big mess to clean up.

I plan to scrub the bathroom down with some bleach. Some of the stuff got on the carpet right outside the bathroom. Does anyone know where I can rent a steam vaccum to sanitize the carpet? What a great way to begin the weekend

Thanks for the tip. There happens to be a Kroger near my apartment so I will go check it out Good thing it isn't summer yet or else the high heat and humidity will really stink up the place.

Do any of your local stores have a RugDoctor steam machine you can rent? I rented one at Jewel-Osco (part of Albertsons) and it works really well.

Shouldn't the people who run your building clean this up for you??? It's not your fault a pipe burst so why should you clean it up? If this was me i'de be pissed as hell and would make sure that they came and cleaned up all the shit, not me.

Straight and chrystal, I don't know the details of a flat rental agreement in the US but before spending heavy money for replacing practically everything,
you should throw in a closer look in the rental contract together with
the insurance policy, if you subscribed to one (in Fce, it's among the "joyful and mandatory" steps), to check if they can pay you back part or all of the spendings

Spent a great deal of today cleaning up the bathroom and adjacent carpet. You are right that this is the apartment's problem but where I live, the apartments are old and maintenance don't give a damn . If it happens again though, I am going to request for another apartment.
