  • American POWs

According to Iraqi TV some American GIs were captured and are now POWs. They were shown on TV during questioning.

The US Secretary of Defense was very quick to refer to the Geneva Convention and call this illegal.

Earlier a larger number of Iraqi POWs were shown on CNN.

What do we learn from that?
    - if America does something, it is perfectly legal
    - if Iraq does the same, it is illegal

    Regards,
    Peter

Iraqi TV also showed the bodies of 7 American soldiers who appeared to be shot execution style. THAT is illegal.

Actually, capturing Iraqi military personnel and detaining them as prisoners is NOT illegal. However, detaining U.S. soldiers and executing them on t.v. IS illegal (Vice-Versa). We may be capturing Iraqi soldiers but we are not executing them in front of t.v., Iraqi soldiers are capturing some of our troops and executing them in front of t.v. Thus, it is NOT the same thing that we our doing.

AlohaPacific, please do us all a favour and actually READ posts before you comment on them.

Iraqi TV did not show any executions, but they simply showed US POWs while the were being questioned. They had to say their names.

According to the Geneva Convention it is illegal to photograph POWs, or show them on television. This is a privacy issue.

Several times CNN has showed captured Iraqis, which is also illegal according to the Geneva Convention.

I agree of course that executions are illegal, be it live on TV or not. But the interesting point is that Rumsfeld calls international law in this case, only days after the US kicked this law in the a..

        Peter

Yes, I have seen these pictures, too. But this is not the topic. The topic is that two do the same, but for one it should be illegal?

MSNBC is reporting that US POWs have been executed by the Iraqis. This is highly illegal, and still further proof that this regime needs to go. really time to take the gloves off...

Guys, please READ the topic before you comment. I was never saying that executing POWs was legal.

I compared a simple fact that both war parties have done, i.e. showing POWs on TV. This is illegal according to the Geneva Convention.

Rumsfeld called up the Convention to quickly point out that it was illegal to show US POWs on Iraqi TV, but basically at the same time captured Iraqis were shown on CNN.

Please give your comments to this fact, I'd love to hear your replies.

                    Regards,
                    Peter

OK, are you comparing showing prisoners on TV to executing them? True, they are both against the law, but some crimes are worse than others. Thats like comparing trespassing to 7 counts of murder in the first degree.

I was comparing showing POWs on television, just that, nothing more. There were no executions on TV, but Iraqi TV showed what were apparently dead American GIs. It is not founded that these were executed, they can as well have died during fighting.

Actually according to the Geneva Convention (and the US military's Uniform Code of Military Justice) what is illegal is the televising of Interrogations, not necessarily the POWS themselves.

Parading the American POWs in front of televison cameras is undoubtedly a breach of the Geneva Convention.

At this stage it is not known how the deceased American soldiers also shown met their deaths. However, it was a disgraceful thing to have allowed the bodies to be shown.

I have seen Iraqi POWs on television lying down and kneeling down waiting to be searched, being searched and in groups sitting around. This too is almost certainly against the Geneva Convention.
