    Same theory as winglets and raked wingtips. A prop is just a spinning airfoil so it suffers from induced drag from tip vortices as well. Due to high rotational velocities the airflow in the tip voticies can approach or even break the speed of sound causing horrendous noise and prop strain (Big engine Cessnas at full power). Reducing tip vortices reduces drag (improved efficiency), noise and wear.
