  • B767 only .80 mach?

Why B767 is only fly at .80 mach than .82 or .84?

the slower you go, the less gas you burn....to a point

The 767 was designed during the first global energy crisis to fly fuel-efficiently. This proved to be what the world needed as opposed to SSTs or high speed subsonic jets like the CV990.

Using the most efficient wing of the time resulted in a M0.78 long range cruise speed and a Mmo of M0.82. At this speed we are well above the minimum manoeuvring speed due to the high available lift and low drag. This also allows higher initial cruising altitudes.

As a result the 767 still flies long haul at a relatively good burn per passenger. Sales of new 767s by Boeing are only just winding up now!
