PPL written.

Since I'm turning 17 in November I plan to take my checkride for my PPL then, but from what I've heard it's best to go ahead and take my written exam just to get it out of the way. I've been looking at some of the DVD test prep things but I don't know which ones are best (of course they all say you'll pass, but I figure at least one of them has to suck). I keep taking those practice tests and I suck at them. Not really encouraging.
Here's a few of the DVD's I was looking at.

So many to choose from, just adding to the confusion. Does anybody have any experience with any of these products? Would you recommend them if you did use them?

I would not suggest the Kingschools crap. It can't stop laughing at John and Martha. I am currently using the instrument "Cleared for Approach" or some bs like that.. I think the best thing is that little $10 Gleim book. It has a few pages with some pictures but seriously no need to spend 200 bucks. Just spend 10 and keep taking the tests.

JD don't waste your time with DVDs and junk. The red Gleim book should be your bible...know it front to back. I had one similiar to the Gleim and I got a 94

I'm not a huge fan of the FAA written exam as it is now. It really has turned into "see how many of the answers you can memorize out of the Gleim book, rather than an actual test of your knowledge.

What I would reccomend is that you actually use a good set of books, a ground school, or a DVD set to get the concepts and THEN hit the Gleim book. The students I currently instruct are using the Cessna Pilot Kit that is put together by the Kings. I haven't heard many good things about it. The Kings do a great job at conveying information, but they are very corny and they are designed for someone who has been away from the academic environment for quite some time. I have received a few demo disks from Sportys and have been very impressed.

The staple for PPL in Canada has always been "From the Ground Up".

Memorize the Gleim, then learn it after you jump through the hoop....err take the written.

For what it's worth, the worst test score I ever had was my PPL written.

Since I got my private before I went to college, I had to take a private written to get credit for that class, or provide my test score. I had my commercial / multi by then.

Took the test, failed it miserably......

Your flight school doesn't provide the materials for you? Or are you trying to save money? Because my flight school provides the videos and books for you. Anyways, what I used was the Jeppesen Private Pilot DVD Video Course. A wee bit old, but effective provided you don't sit in a warm room with comfy chairs.

I got the red Gleim book (took less than 18 hours to get here from Sportys with the standard USPS shipping (grin) ). It's really helpful because I can just skip over the sections I'm already comfortable with. It's layed out really well too.
