  • MBA and being a pilot for the majors

    Hi fellas,
I've posted before questions about becoming a pilot. I'd like to do this, but I'd also like to have a degree that I can fall back upon. Tell me this: if I get the ratings and the hours, would an MBA still be able to get me hired for a regional, and later major carrier?
    Thanks a lot,
    Mitch
By the by, how can I get rid of my photos link in my sig? I hate to exceed the size limit

Just a guess (I am in your same situation), a company most likely wont not hire you because you have an extra degree. If its not a non-factor, its definately a bonus. On the flipside, if you don't have it, and you spend some time flying for a regional and want to go to the management end, they probably will consider you a good candidate.

Personally, Im considering a master in Aerospace engineering, mainly because I want to be a test pilot.

You could get hired with an MBA. All airlines are simply looking for a degree in something. You could have a degree in underwater basketweaving and it would be just like having an MBA.

Yup, almost all major airlines in the US just require a 4-year degree. Basketweaving is a popular choice

As one of my professors put it " It is all about who has the most checks on their resume." Most airlines are just looking for hours and a four year undergrad degree. An MBA would help you look a little better than others....

Hey.... I thought the most popular degree choice was under water fire prevention.

You're question has already been answered. But....

The MBA itself won't get you hired, it is a sweet thing to have though.

When you get on with your first regional, you'll go for a time enjoying the job, enjoying the flying, etc. It'll be the best thing since sliced bread.

After a time, you might realize it's a BS career. If you commute, have a family, etc, you'll find yourself thankful you have that MBA, and likely a job using it making triple what you were at the airline. Get that MBA!

Some like a little bit of grad work. Delta really likes it, from what their jobs website says. Personally, I'm so burned out with college, I don't see myself getting a grad degree right away when I'm done although I'd like to eventually.

Haha, that attitude really concerns me....I can see that being myself in a few years. Maybe I should go become an MD or something..... nah, i like flying too much!

A MBA is good for running the company, however there are lots of other degrees that will help you. Having a degree is not the "be all to end all", however a uni or college education generally shows that you have the capabiltiy to think and work on your own.

Believe it or not "common sense" is really important. A book smart person with no common sense is dangerous. when I was the Export Manager in Cargo they gave us a financial MBA and he was very high on himself. One day he was berating the secretaries and I asked him what his problem was. He told me they would not do his "bidding" and he had a MBA. I repleied, "yep, you are a Mighty Big Asshole". He transferred out that week.

Personally I have a degree in Urban Planning and a diploma in Transportation Management
