I doubt the pilots can even see the painted disc for it to reduce glare. I would tend to go with AJ's option of MLS equipment, especially since the NASA Shuttle uses a similar approach method and also has a dark band around the nose.
The F-WOWW picture from airliners was especially interesting....mostly because JetPhotos screeners would reject it for "aircraft not centred".

Not many do if they've never used it. It's not like they teach it during IFR training in a light single (or even light twin) which half the time is lucky to have 2 fully functional VOR receivers, much less something as complex as an MLS receiver.
