  • G1000 Rental costs.

Ok so here's the situation I'm in. I'm a few months away from finishing my PPL training on a 1975 C172. Well now my flight school is selling this plane, AND their Piper Arrow, which I was going to do my high performance on, but I guess that's shot to hell now. Their plan is to buy a 172 with a G1000. Does having the G1000 in the aircraft mean that it will be more expensive to rent?
Ugh. I still say G1000 in a bugsmasher is a f*cking waste. I really don't want to have to learn all this crap while I'm already trying to study my ass off to get my PPL.

It's not hard to learn, promise. This is coming from a guy who can't even figure out contrast in PS. If I can do it, you can do it.
And I don't know what my school is like compared to elsewhere, but it's $135/hr. in the 172.
    Cheers,
    Mitch

That sucks. What are your other options besides a 172? The G1000 172 at my old school went for like $5 more an hour. Also, you couldn't do your high performance in an Arrow anyway. It needs to be GREATER than 200hp. I believe you mean your complex endorsement.

Ahh I thought it meant 200 OR more. Thanks for lettin me know. What about a 182? Haven't brushed up on the specs of that one. Besides a 172 there aren't any options. They have a 2001 model now, but apparently they don't let people solo in it unless they already have their PPL, which I don't. I'm also not keen on wasting the time and money getting a checkout for it (fuel injected engine, whereas the one I've flown has carb heat and all that jazz)

Mitch, Jordan only gets to fly about once a month right now just like me, and now that he's very close to getting his PPL, I doubt he wants to go and learn a whole new thing.

Anyway at my school, these are the charges, all wet, but with a $12/h fuel surcharge:
            172R(160hp): $120 block, $125 member, $140 standard
            172SP(180hp): $130 block, $135 member, $150 standard
            172SP(G1000): $140 block, $145 member, $160 standard.

So yeah, its deffinately more expensive. I fly the 172R right now(why pay $10/h more just to get 20 more hp?), but my school only has 1 172R, and if it were gotten rid of, I would be pretty pissed. And if the 172SPs with the standard cockpits were gotten rid of, it'd be a lot harder to afford flying and re-learn all the systems...

            Good luck KFC.

At my flight school, the Analogs run from 132.50-139.50 wet. The G1000s run from 150-155.

And I just figured out how to save $140 on my flight training by switching to analog.

Ok so I spoke with one of the owners of the flight school, and they said they don't know what it'll rent for yet, but they're saying it's usually $125-130. Right now they rent all their planes dry, so the 172 I currently fly is $73 an hour, and the 172S model (ex erau ) is $85 an hour dry. So hopefully that 125 an hour would be wet, because I pretty much refuse to pay 150 an hour for a bugsmasher just because it has a fancy, useless computer in it. Sorry, but like I said, G1000 in a 172, especially a trainer, is useless.

Dry... Fuel is around $30 an hour, and that's an optimistic estimate. So the it's really maybe $110 or so an hour.

You still beat me by $30/hour! Then again, you only pay $25 for the CFI, I have to pay $60.

$60 an hour for the instructor?! My god. When I moved here to austin I thought $40 bucks an hour for the instructor was robbery.. Down in Harlingen where I got my PPL it was $75 an hour for 172N wet plus the $30 for the CFI. Up in AUS a 172sp goes for $132 an hour wet, the g1000 $142 hr wet.. I do not have much experience using these glass cockpits, I've flown a COL350 a few times.. From my experience with it has been pretty sweet. But I will not rent a plane with it..
