  • Military Lighting

Aloha fellow geeks , aerosexuals and enthusiasts alike

My question I have been pondering on for a while is :

What are these diagonal light strips on the Military A/C used for ?

I've seen them illuminated once before on a C-17A but never again since.

My initial thought was inflight refuelling at night but yea....

    here below "US AIR"

    And here more noticably.

Would the Nav lights on the wings not be enough of an indication during night formation flying ??

          NVG's

They can be used to detect the orientation of the aircraft while wearing Night Vision Goggles (NVG).

They are usually referred to as "slime lights" due to their color. They are used for night formation flying, to give the pilot a better perspective of the aircraft. Usually in night formation flying, the nav lights will be dimmed, and the formation lights provide a better picture of your relative position.
