  • George Smiley would approve since A Small Town In Germany took place in Bonn.

John LeCarre who was actually in MI ...

    • Lots of references to booktitles by John Le Carré (David John Moore Cornwell). Titles such as "Smiley's people" and "A small town in Germany". And JLC was a member of MI6.

Annoyingly George Smiley was not part of the "Small Town" book, so I suppose the place we're looking for could be in any of JLC's books. Even though I have a holiday now, and the weather is shite, I don't quite feel like reading them all.

        • Hooo boy! Egg on my face. It had been a long time since those books and I fully admit to assuming that George Smiley was just part of that landscape.

So, you are quite accurate that I erred?

Coin toss so .. you two fight it out to see who goes. I am going to pour a hot bath and have a good sulk.

          • As far as I am concerned you can continue. Just post another hint or two to get us back into the right direction.

BTW, Brian, why do you think of Cologne/Bonn when thinking of smelly things? Just for the record, Duesseldorf has the nickname Scheiss am Rhein.

            • Cologne is mens perfume or "toilet water" in the US. Stronger than "after shave" so more the equivalent of perfume for men?

Actually is has fallen from favor. It used to be that young men would always be gifted Canoe, Old Spice or Pinaud at Christmas.

Brian did come up with the name despite my flawed protagonist in Bonn.

              • I'm lost here.

Did I get it right somewhere along the line ??? BTW, I chose Budapest as it is a film location where I think a runway scene was shot in the film of the LeCarre novel "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy" (Which I just bought for my Kindle eReader)

                • Yes Brian, in #1710 you identified Cologne-Bonn Adenaur and indicated you were drawn to the smell.

I think his novels were great works that were meant to confuse you and keep you off balance. The first of his that I read was the Little Drummer Girl and I kept having to go back to see which character was actually "center stage"; the imposter or real operative?

Spying is waiting, spying is watching and spying is boring.

I forget which one that was from.

                  • Take the location of a recent... and for that matter also past..... Bond movie, the first name of a TV chef and a well known UK sweet, the last two to make a traveller......and there you have it.

                    • In the latest movie the city concerned suffered a rather deflating moment at the end.

                            • Nope.

                              To reprise the clues....

A recent Bond movie had a major scene part set here. It caused part of the city to fall down. It was also a scene set for a Roger Moore Bond film. This is the city served by the airport.

The chef ? Think of someone with an Italian-Franco-English name. His first name forms the airports first name.

The English sweet ? It's mint flavoured, seems to have a bit missing and forms the second part of the airport name. It's also the name of an equestrian sport.

I can't really expand on these clues without telling you the name !!!

Thanks, penny dropped on that one. Marco Polo airport in Venice, Italy.

From Russia with Love with Sean Connery (you forgot about that one heh?), Moonraker for Roger Moore and Casino Royale for Daniel Craig.

I had to google for the name after I figured out the airport was Marco Polo. I will assume you mean chef Marco Pierre White? Never heard of him before, even through there's a lot of cooking shows (including English ones) on Dutch telly.

The English sweet ? It's mint flavoured, seems to have a bit missing and forms the second part of the airport name.
Not familiar with (most) English sweets. So this hint, while perhaps obvious for the guys in England, gets kind a lost on an international board. But clearly you mean the Polo Mints. That is to say, clearly: after the airport name was already revealed. The only sweet where 40% is removed, and then advertised as a desirable feature! I´ll never understand the English.

This is a hint worthy of international forums!
