  • Brian, the USMC would do primary training with ac. Most days I didn't know who I was with till I checked my "cover", in aviation USN, USMC and USCG did much training as one. I suspect Marines used it for initial carrier ops.

    • Thanks, Brian!

This field has one runway, 12,100 feet long. At one time, it had two runways, making it one of only three of its type with two runways. It was designed to handle the largest aircraft of their category, and thus the facilities were among the largest of their type. It is now a commercial zone, and the field is only open to day VFR traffic with prior permission.

      • I'm thinking that you might be as devious as me when it comes to clues !

The largest aircraft of their type....hmmm ?

Could this be Bostrups Landing Seaplane base ?

        • No, this airfield is landlocked. But oh so close to an international border.

                • We have a winner!

It was one of three SAC bases with two runways. The base covered over 14,000 acres, making it the largest SAC base. Loring was designed for a capacity of 100 B-36 bombers, which gave it the largest ramp, fuel and weapons storage capacities in SAC. Loring was closed by the Air Force in 1994, and is now the site of a commercial development zone. And while it is not near a coast line, it is just a stone's throw from Canada. In face, I flew into Loring in a KC-135 back in the 1980s. We had the gas, so we shot some landings, and the airport traffic pattern took us over Canada.

                  • Another island airport, one of only two in the republic with paved runways. Of the airlines serving it only three are European.

Nope, wrong side of "The Pond". Same majority national language though. It has a proper terminal now but not long ago you would have arrived in a tin shack.
