  • I'm a little confused here. Are we in the UK now ? Also confusing is that I cannot find a 6170 foot runway anywhere in the uk or Ireland.

    • Yes, but Wiki will fail you on this one despite it's size.

1880m asphalt and an elevation of 172 asl

      • Still open, buy a private strip now, you .... may .... just have to call ahead.

        Seems like mostly limited cargo.

        • OH....BLOODY HELL !! I've flown in our medevac helicopter from there !!!!

          Dunsfold, Surrey.

Built by the Canadians as a bomber base.
Home of an ex BA 747 used in the Bond film Casino Royale.

....and that long streak of useless p**s known as Jeremy Clarkson, Presenter of the "Top Gear" programme which is fimed there.

I don't see the connection to "Accipiters" though ? ...and as far as I know there is no cargo flying, in fact no flying at all commercially apart from the Air Ambulance.

          • 1950's era, the buildings were occupied by Hawker Siddeley and the Sea Hawk and Harrier were built there among a few others.

I thought you would make the med connection.

I watch TG (with a grain of salt), especially since Clarkson and crew need a few history lessons on cars but ..... I often see what I think are "Convair", type 4 engine types along with a smattering of war birds including that DC-3 in "D-Day" regalia.

TG is just part of the TV wasteland but a tad "better" than we get over here. At least I get get to see the occasional TR-3 or TVR's that were part of my teen days.

I had a turbo "blow through" Corvair Spyder that would do the early 911's up for lunch. The Griffith or Tuscan is still on my want list!

Oh! What James Bond lost .... was an "0" ..... the one runway is "07".

            • Named after a well known aviation pioneer, this airport is close to the origin of a famous railway.

                      • The person after whom the airport was named was married to a famous writer.

                        • I was going to try Amelia Earhart Field in Atchison Kansas because of the famous Judy Garland and Bing Crosby song ... Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe.

But Charles Lindbergh was not a writer of note so ...

My aunt was secretary to Ryman Herr, the prosecutor and was in court for the whole trial and his home where the child was kidnapped is only a mile from me. It is now a minimum correctional facility for "young men" and I have been through the place a few times ..... not as a "guest" ... just making a delivery so to speak.

This writer thing has got me now!

On a sad note, Wichita Kansas used to be the "hub" for most of the US airlines and manufacturers maintenance; now being "off shored" to SE Asia. and I thought I had it "nailed" ..

                          • If you had said Amelia Earhart Field.......

You would have been and are indeed correct. Amelia married writer and publisher George Putnam and not Charles Lindbergh. Lindbergh married a lady by the name of Anne Morrow.
The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe railroad runs close by and indeed starts in nearby Atchison.

In fact, you got everything right except the husband ! I made the same mistake when searching for clues. The only aviator/aviatrix marriage I can think of is Amy Johnson and Jim Mollison.

                            Over to you.

                            • Oooooops. Well thank you for thinking through what I thought I meant.

"Local legend and a flawed memory often lead to "associations" that are in error. There was also a reclusive old gal living not too far from here that a flock of the local press were convinced that (she) was Amelia Earhart. I certainly should have "checked my sources" .... (me) .... in that case.

Darned near went across the street and checked with my neighbor who is a member of the 99's and a great source on gals who flew ... her license plate on her car is .... AV8RX ..

                              On the new?

Originally envisioned by another pioneer in 1935, the famous Juan Trippe had big plans for this field, however it almost became a "Juan way street" due to the folks at "Foggy Bottom".
